I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person but... *mini-rant*

Can people PLEASE stop blowing up my FB feed with this "OMG Katy Perry is Illuminati" over the ridiculous Egyptian inspired sequence of hers? Yes, I know, Eye of Horus, blahblah, Holy Grail, fishpaste, but really? She's a freaking pop star and, from what I've seen of her off-stage, she's a particularly vapid one at that. (Yes, that's my personal opinion and I stand by it as an opinion, not as a fact.)

I don't think there's any danger of her belonging to a secret organization that wants to take over the world, and I seriously doubt she's subliminally messaging your kids to get them to join a cult or whatever. I won't believe that she's Illuminati until she personally comes out and says "hey guys, I'm totally Illuminati and I want to recruit your kiddies!" Even then, I probably wouldn't believe her because she likes to do attention-grabby stunts - that kinda her job...

GAH!

Rant over. Is anyone else disturbed by the shit-storm this thing is causing?

  • Luckily my Facebook is not filled with that crap!
  • Maybe I just have more crazy friends who have more crazy friends than normal...

  • Thankfully I haven't seen any of that.

My aunt and my cousin are HUGE conspiracy theorists. I have to hide their FB updates. It just gets too annoying.
  • Haven't seen any of that on my FB feed, thankfully! It sounds ridiculous.

  • If that's what they're saying about a Katy Perry music video, I'd love to hear what they said about Lady Gaga's videos for Judas and Born this Way
  • I didn't see anything about this on my FB or anywhere else- luckily....

I totally remember "Gaga is Illuminati" stuff back when 'Bad Romance' was released

Now I want to watch Judas. Mmmmm Norman Reedus.

  • I haven't seen any of that stuff. People are nutty.
  • There's also a theory floating around that Jay-Z and Beyonce are in the Illuminati too. I just roll my eyes at that stuff.
    ~*~*~*~*~

  • I haven't seen anything about this. My newsfeed is just full of Olympics stuff.

  • I haven't seen this on my newsfeed. But both FFIL and my Nana believe there is some kind of anti-Christian conspiracy in the US. I'm pretty sure FFIL honestly believes Obama is a Muslim sent by Kenyan Socialists to destroy the fabric of American society. I mean... Criticize the guy all you want. Just do it for reasons that are, you know, real.

I have relatives like this. My mom's uncle is convinced that Obama isn't going to step down when his term is up.
  • I know people who are convinced that Obama isn ot only a Muslim, but he was not born in the US and he's gay. I mean, seriously?! SERIOUSLY?!

  • @jdluvr06 and Cookie: to me it just means people are extremely gullible and I feel sad about FFIL's intelligence in this respect. I will engage with any valid criticism somebody wants to argue about, but falling back on these (debunked) conspiracy theories shuts down any real discussion. And makes me think the speaker is just sort of a sheep without his/her own thoughts.

FI's family is all SUPER conservative. No judgement on that, but they are ALWAYS bashing Obama for dumb stuff. I had to hide FSIL from my FB feed because of all the dumb stuff comparing Obama to Hitler. FFS, people- I don't really care what you believe but try to use an OUNCE of intelligence when you form your beliefs.

  • I think I must have already unfriended those people so I'm not seeing any of this!

Have you been talking to my dad? There is a reason why I hide his feed.

Only if your dad went to my high school! It's amazing to me how many people don't bother reading the newspaper or watching the news before spouting off. Of course, these people are all afraid of the "liberal media"!

  • On further inspection, the Illuminati theory seems to be limited to my pacific northwest based pothead friends, so it's obviously not as big a deal anywhere else... Or, y'know, everyone else is busy with stuff that actually matters.

As for the Obama thing... thankfully most of my friends who choose to comment on political matters are actually capable of forming a logical argument. And we sort of have an unspoken rule that if you compare ANYONE to Hitler (or Nazis in general), you're cut-off from the argument.

Anyway, the big conspiracy theory that we're seeing in SA at the moment is that Mandela was dead for 6 months before it was actually announced, because he didn't die at a "convenient time" for the government. The idea is that because we're coming up on the general elections, the ruling party wanted the memory of Madiba, his "legacy", and his funeral as handled by the ruling party to be foremost in people's minds when they vote. Well, if that's the case, it's definitely backfired on them (insert fake sign language here). I don't know if it's true that he was already dead or that he was dead that long, but what we DO know is that all military personnel had their leave rescinded a full two weeks before the government announced that Mandela was dead, which is pretty suspicious.

  • I confess I read vigilantcitizen for the entertainment value. It started with a post about Lady Gaga being illuminati. There's stuff on there about mind control that's pretty fun to read too.

I hate the Obama stuff. That's all my mom posts about, though I haven't heard the gay one. I hid her posts.

  • I hated the death hoax of brian johnson, it gave me a heart attack last night.

I've also heard that Beyonce sold her soul to Satan.

Oh yea, I saw the Beyonce is the Illuminati video. One particular friend (who also shares numerous photos that are not factual) shared it on my Facebook page after her Superbowl performance.

My pet peeve is people sharing statuses/photos that are completely untrue and a simple google search would disprove in an instant!

The latest one that popped up on my feed was a photo with Bush, Bush, Reagan, Clinton and Obama. All of them are apparently in the midst of giving speeches and they all have American flags behind them except Obama who has a yellow-patterned "muslim prayer curtain" behind him.  The first comment by one of my friend's friends? "That curtain has been in the White House since at least Carter."

My beef is that this picture is implying that Bush, Reagan, Clinton and Bush always speak in front of a flag and Obama always speaks in front of something else.  When if you just google "Obama speaking" you will get literally hundreds of pictures of Obama speaking in front of American flags. You will also find him speaking in front of that exact same curtain with flags on either side!  You can also find pictures of the other presidents speaking in front of walls without flags.

Now, I am not an Obama supporter, far from it, but I dislike him for legitimate reasons, not some picture that deliberately skews reality.

I never share political posts on my Facebook and I rarely share other types of "chain" things, but the few that I do, I fact check.  I shared the one going around about the A&F owner who said his clothes were made for the cool kids and not for uncool kids, but I didn't share it until I googled it and found newspaper articles quoting the guy and knew that it was factual.

Yesterday, I also saw a picture accompanied by the "Albert Einstein quote" that says something to the effect of "I rue the day technology will take over our lives. Technology will replace relationships."  Seriously, people, he never said that!

Every time I see a post like that, I usually google it. A recent one was that whole maggots will grow in a cut in your mouth if you eat certain things with a cut in your mouth.  The quickest google will disprove it, so why not google it and save yourself the embarrassment of looking like a gullible idiot on Facebook?

I rarely comment on these because it's just not worth it but I want to every time I see one in hopes people will learn.

    *end rant
  • Ohhh I saw the curtain thing too. That makes me so freaking mad.

I agree, I don't like Obama, but there are much better reasons to dislike him than worrying about the fact that his middle name is Hussein.
