So the obvi answer is you should never expect a gift from anyone (makes it not a gift but an obligation)
...however
for those of you who had folks RSVP no- family and such that you are close with but just can't make it (my family lives in GA and I'm getting married in MD) do they usually still send gifts? and if they don't come, when do they send the gifts??\

That line of thinking sets you up to be disappointed. Speaking from personal experience.

Just don't expect anything otherwise you will be disappointed. If you have low expectations regarding gifts you will be all the more surprised if you receive some!
