Heels to flats

I have a lot of back issues so I will be changing from heels into flats by mid reception I would say. Luckily I've always been pretty good with heels but I can imagine after a long day and hitting that dance floor I'm going to be dead. Anyway my dress is a tulle ball gown and I have these gorgeous 4 inch heels. My question is, is that TOO high for me to change from heels into flats? Will there be too much material of my dress hitting the floor to the point I'm tripping over myself? Anyone who has changed their heels please let me know. I'm starting to consider finding shorter heels so that way the hem of the dress is not so drastic once I change shoes.

Re: Heels to flats

  • I changed from 3.5" heels to ballet flats for dancing.  I thought I was going to be dragging a lot of dress on the floor, but it really wasn't too bad.  I only got stepped on once (and my bustle didn't break!).  My dress didn't have a ton of layers, though - it was an A-line with only a couple layers of tulle to give it some shape - if you have a ton of layers, the change might be a bigger issue.
  • I had heels that were maybe an inch and a half and ended up having to get married barefoot. Yes, I was tripping over myself until I could put my heels back on at the reception.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Your dress is going to be hemmed to just barely above the floor in the front.  Now, think about almost 4 inches of material on the ground.  You will definitely have to pick up the sides of your dress as you walk or else I can't see how you wouldn't trip in it.  Do you want to be holding your dress up all night?  What about some type of platform shoe to change in to?
  • Thank you ladies. @joanE2012 that makes sense, and I def don't want to be holding my dress the whole night.
  • What shoe stores online has anyone purchased for their wedding shoes btw? (There are no major stores around me that sell white shoes, RIDICULOUS I know)
  • I got mine at Nordstroms, but you can check out the following online....Zappos, DSW, Piperlime, 6pm, Shoebuy, etc.  I think I've bought from all of them (not for wedding!) and don't recall any problems with any of them.  Some have free shipping and returns.
  • I ordered 2 pairs of shoes - I love them both and they'll both get worn.
1st pair came from coloriffics.com - I got THESE on clearance.  I love them.  If I go with this pair I'll wear them for the ceremony and pictures.  We WILL have a lot of walking for our pictures and to get from the ceremony site to the 'dinner reception' - so I'll wear something I feel more comfortable walking in and carry my dress.  The Coloriffics site has a ton of bridal shoes with a decent selection on clearance.

2nd pair came from DSW - I got in silver (THESE).  They actually looked really good with jeans and I know I'll wear them lots.

  • I also wore a tulle ball gown and 4 inch heels. I changed into flip flops towards the end of thenight. My dress was dragging the whole time. And H stepped on it and put a big hole in the tulle. I would suggest you get rocket dogs or some other platform flat. I know they are ugly but no one will see them.

  • Can you handle wedged sandals?  I wore 3.5" heels and then switched to a pair of foam wedged flip flops that I got from VS.  They were about the same height but 100% more comfortable then my heels.  I didn't have to worry about my dress at all.

  • I only had 2 1/2 inch heels on and once I lost the heels to go to flats I was carrying the front of my dress when walking. If you go off Maggie0829 suggestion, payless shoes happens to have some cute wedge wedding flip flops available online that are pretty cute & for the price, if you never wear them again you won't mind.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! :)
