It's Oscar day ~ woot!!

I am, and always have been, a total and complete sucker for the Academy Awards. I used to throw a big party for all the ladies (one year even had a "red carpet"…until it blew away & landed in the neighbor's tree. Oops) and we'd play a fun game where everyone pulled an actor or actress picture out of a bowl and you were then that person for the night. You got points for stuff (winning, thanking God/a parent/spouse, getting drunk, etc.) and lost points for stuff (crying, taking too long, etc). Good times, I tell ya.

But alas, those days are long gone. Now I watch them on the couch with just the FI, we'll likely drink a little too much wine and fall asleep before they are even over.

So let me live vicariously through y'all. Who's going to watch them? Anything exciting planned?

And, most importantly, best picture will go to:

  • As someone who studied theatre (with an empasis in acting), I'm completely jaded when it comes to the Oscars. First of all, studios pay money to campaign for them, so they're incredibly skewed toward Hollywood big budget pictures. Also, the amount of times truly good films have been screwed over by mediocre fluff (anyone remember Crash, that one was the last straw for me...) is astounding to me. I also had a professor who I didn't really respect who was a member of the academy (as a screenwriter), and it just goes to show that the people voting on these things are not necessarily great artists with great taste. At least the People's Choice Awards are honest about the fact that it's a popularity contest. I predict Gravity will win. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining, but it was also plagued by bad, overly senimental writing. End rant :/

Doesn't mean you can't have fun watching them, though! Edited for the spellings
  • I hear you. In no way, shape, or form do I believe them to be "fair" or a true representation of talent. Still a good time to ooo & aww (or gag) over the dresses, though ;)

  • Yeah I usually don't watch the Oscars because the only awards shows I watch are the ones with tons of performances (Grammys,Tonys, the Tonys are my favorite). I will be watching this year though. Better Midler, U2, Idina Menzel, and Pink... Yeah that is pretty awesome. I voted for 12 Years a Slave but I think it could be a toss up between that and American Hustle.
  • Agreed. I always look at the red carpet pics online.
  • I used to watch religiously, but I started getting bored of it a few years back.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I'm half tempted to watch the red carpet just to see more Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski.

But, FI and I are going to watch game tourneys and play WoW instead. :)

I live for the fashion. I write a weekly TV and Celeb column so it's really research for what I will write tomorrow. I'm hoping 12 Years a Slave takes best picture along with Best Director and Best supporting for Lupita. Plus I can't wait to see what she's gonna wear!

    Rough research ;)

    And she looks stunning!

  • I voted for 12 Years a Slave just because I adore Benedict Cumberbatch.

I actually haven't seen any of these movies because my interests (according to the Oscars at least) apparently run towards the pedestrian! Haha.

  • Twelves Years a Slave is winning by a landslide in our TK poll. Only 4 more looooong hours until we know for sure ;)

  • First time watching all of the way through. I'm excited. Ice cream, wine and popcorn (for the second night in a row!). :)

  • I know it is a flawed system, but I love watching the Oscars. I think 12 Years a Slave, but I think Her should get more love than it is getting. It takes a strange concept, but makes it seem normal.

  • It's different watching it so early.

Sadly I haven't watched a single movie nominated this year.   Waiting for on demand.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I haven't seen Her yet but I really want to. For some reason, the previews put me in the mind of Lars & the Real Girl, which I loooooooved!

I get that connection. It has some similarity, but is still pretty different.
