Happy Monday

How was the weekend?

Saturday DH went to a memorial for his stepsister's grandmother.  I tried hard not to judge BIL for not going with the "you never know what someone is doing" line.  Except I know that he was home putting together a movie room because he posted pics all over fb with the line "how I spent my Saturday."

Sunday we played in the snow and took down cabinets. Today I need to finish up some packing and do my last load of dishes in the crappy dishwasher.  24 hours until the crew comes, but my crew started yesterday.

Re: Happy Monday

  • That pic is adorable and terrifying at the same time.  ;) Especially M2 with the hammer.

Weekend was good.  Friday was dinner with the parents and my sisters.  Saturday was running around shopping and the kiddo stayed with a friend. I also went to a boxing class with a friend.   Sunday was for relaxation and the Oscars.

We watched Captain Phillips yesterday afternoon.  Decent movie.  DefConn was late going to bed, waking up, and napping all weekend.  I'm sure he's going to be a hot mess at the sitter today.

And a cold finally got to me.  Stupid winter.

I went to the symphony on Friday, and the hipster next to me was apparently a conducting nerd or something because he kept laughing like the conductor was doing something totally hilarious. He also kept playing with the waxed corners of his hipster 'stache which drove me absolutely insane. I've never seen him before, so I don't think he'll be sitting next to me again, but gaaaah.

We spent most of the weekend watching Harold Ramis movies. Husband was doing the Elder Scrolls Online beta and I downloaded some more Sims expansions, so we were both gaming during the movies. Yay for time wasting! We also got sushi and went to our favorite bookstore on Saturday -- we were mad excited because we finally found the book All About Radiation by L. Ron Hubbard. It has the most incredibly idiotic recommendations for dealing with radiation, as LRH claimed he was a nuclear physicist when he actually failed out of college during his first semester.

Last night, we had an ice storm. I'm glad I know how to ice skate, because I had to ice skate across the parking lot this morning. The Interstates are closed, there are wrecks everywhere, half of the nurses are MIA (one just called to say she's not coming at all, but there are still two we haven't heard from and work started 45 minutes ago)... I think we'll have a lot of cancellations, and I hope we do just because we don't have the manpower to take care of thirty-five patients today. Fortunately, husband is working from home today, so I don't have to worry about being late this evening, which will probably happen if we have a ton of patients with our current nursing staff.

  • I loved the pics on fb, 6.  My kids always want to help, too.

Saturday Son had baseball tryouts and then the ILs took the kids overnight.  DH and I had dinner and then he went to a guys' night that ended up pretty weird (see below).

While he was gone, I went shopping for several hours.  It was so nice to just walk around any store I wanted for as long as I wanted without anyone rushing me.  I haven't done that in a while.  Then I came home and watched whatever the hell I wanted on tv while I did some craft pinteresting.

I had to go pick up DH and his friends because their ride got puked in and the DD called it a night.  It was before midnight.  Lightweights.  Puker hadn't had that much to drink, so they were all really surprised that he lost it.
  • Officially, two of the six nurses scheduled for today have called out and one is still MIA.

Seven of the ten lab techs have called out as well.

    We're boned.

  • Weekend was pretty good. See other posts for when Evil Chipmunk popped her head up.

Did some house cleaning and laundry, as well as ran around shopping. Made chocolate chip cookies for coworkers and future in laws. Got a package sent off to my grandma with a real touch corsage, 2 cupcakes (the same as what we're giving as favors, from same place as wedding cake) in tupperware, and a copy of the ceremony for her to enjoy this week. It should arrive today. Grandma knows she's getting something wedding related, but doesn't know what it is. She's pretty excited.

Wrote thank you notes for the few I had left to do. As of Saturday, all gifts received prior to our wedding have gotten timely thank you notes sent out within a week of receipt of gift.  FI and I watched Prisoners on Friday night, since Redbox was sold out of Thor: Dark World.

Went in to work yesterday to clean up my office, get some crap done, and prep for meeting today when I tell boss and coworker who is covering for me for a week and a half what's going on in the important assignments. FI decided he wanted to feel"involved" in wedding prep, so he started folding cupcake boxes for me. An hour later, all 60 were done, and I'd taped the sides to increase stability.

There's a plate of cookies on the corner of my desk. They smell awesome.

  • @thejucheidea, have you read the new Hubbard bio?  Well, it's more of a Scientology bio, but it was fascinating and terrifying.

We didn't do much.  Dinner with my parents Friday night, early night home.  Saturday we had some friends over for dinner and I indulged in too much wine and spent most of Sunday in bed, watching True Detective and Newsroom.
  • 6-I think it's great you're including them in the demo, or at least trying to.  That's the fun part anyway.

    Weekend:

H and I drove 2 hours to look at trucks, drove 4 I think, bought one.  Great dealership, great experience, took way more time than it should.  Drove home in new truck, and H went to work.  I was exhausted so I did as little as possible.

    Sunday:

Slept in, shoveled from more snow (so over it!) and then went to SIL's bday party.  Told her I'm taking her to get her hairs did, because what 17 y.o. wouldn't like that?

    What else?

Nothing much, Target run, dinner with the parents.  I'm exhausted after watching the oscars and finishing my book last night.  A pretty good book surprisingly.

  • Ice day ice day :D. So my work just closed for today except for critical and external client meetings. So I am going to take full advantage and do something I WANT to do (plus my little snippet of "critical function" :-/)

Wow @ the symphony hipster douche. I've seen the ill-times clapping quite a but, but they usually get the clue by the second half.

This weekend was errands and the search for DD's nightgowns, which are a tremendous PITA to find, never mind getting them cheap. Also tried to go to Goodwill to get some clothes. BAD idea, it was 50% off everything day. Lines 15 deep to check out and EVERYONE has an overstuffed cart.

And those infernal mommy hoarders that you see at those horrid 2 week mommy consignment sales. Well-to-do mommies grab bunches and bunches of clothes in their cart, when they're done, they triage and put stuff back. It's one thing if you're the only one in the section. Quite another when it's mobbed and nobody else has a chance to see the merch except bourgie mommy.

  • The kiddo asked at least three times between last night and this morning if they had a delay/cancellation.  He sulked his ass off when it didn't happen.

His life is so rough.  They've only had about 8 snow days this year,  *smh*

THEY DIDN'T THIS TIME THEY CLAPPED BETWEEN EVERY FUCKING MOVEMENT OF EVERY FUCKING PIECE

  • IDK what's going on, but that ^ seems to be happening more and more.  When I was in HS and college, I attended the local symphony all the time and no one clapped in between.  But when we bought season tickets last season, it happened at every concert, every time.  DH and I were flabbergasted.

    Oh FFS.

It's been a while since we've gone to the symphony :-/. DH has soured on it some, that doesn't exactly help.

It was even worse because we had a guest conductor, so all I could think was '... oh my god he thinks we all do this.'

You know what.  This could be these people's first time at a symphony.  Maybe they were moved by the piece.  Maybe they thought it was the right thing to do.  Does it really matter?
  • 6, it's annoying and it's bad etiquette.

I've always thought there should be a reminder in the program, that way people who don't know can be saved some face.  It's specialized etiquette and I don't expect everyone to know it.

But each piece is supposed to flow into another and not break the performer's concentration.  And when it's every movement, it really tends to make the concert stretch way long.  If it's not the really formal in-the-hall, everyone is dressed nicely and the performers are in tuxes and gowns, I get being more informal and allowing for the clapping, but when it's the full on symphony, that's the way it is.  *shrug*
  • It's not that much different etiquette than not applauding after a hymn in church service or even a live performer that is doing a piece as a component of the service.

  • I'm pretty sure there is a note regarding clapping etiquette in the program at the Nashville Symphony.

It just sort of smacks of making fun of someone the first time they go to a gym or a fancy restaurant.  The people aren't there to annoy you

I've performed this stuff before and it never really bother me.  Granted, it wasn't at some high level, but oh well.

it's a little pretentious to even mention it. i'm sure eventually people catch on, but i seriously doubt people really need to feel any need to google "proper symphony ettiquette" before attending. if they clap, so what. i have heard people clap in church on days where they have a performer (which is not the norm).

that said, yes there should be a note in the program if it is a problem.

sorry. i'm just finding lots of annoyance lately with snobbery. probably as much as others get annoyed at clapping after a lovely peice of music being played.

  • You know what?  It's not snobbery. Just like if you attend a formal dinner, you're expected to know which silverware to use and have certain manners and if you don't, you ask or watch the host.  Everyone using bad manners doesn't mean it's okay, it just means everyone has bad manners.

turning your nose up at someone who might use the wrong fork at the wrong time during a formal dinner seems like snobbery to me.

people should have good manners, you are right. but if someone doesn't know it is improper behavior to applaud after a piece, nothing is going to teach them unless it's made obvious. just my opinion. an annoucement or a note should be made the norm instead of expecting people to just know.

I guess I would just rather have someone appreciate a piece of art/music/food than have them feel worried they will do something wrong and never go in the first place.
