My grandma is 92, frail, and blind. She lives in Lancaster, PA, and despite her physical condition, she is the sweetest, funniest woman I've ever known. Example: I told her about some of the wedding nightmares I've been having regarding stuff not being done, my dress being messed up, etc. This lovely woman (choir director at a methodist church for 40 years, I swear she has a direct line Upstairs when she needs to make a prayer request), says "Sweetheart, what have you been drinking? I'd like to try a nip of that!"

She cannot attend my wedding for obvious reasons, but I wanted her to still feel included. To that end, I had a RealTouch corsage made for her in ivory roses (all of my costco floral is ivory roses), with a champagne gold ribbon (matches flower girl dresses). I got it done as a wrist corsage so she can feel it over her cast (she recently fell and broke a wrist...2 weeks after falling and breaking her middle finger on her other hand). I also got cupcakes from the same place that we ordered the wedding cake from. The cupcakes are the same flavor as the favors. I put them in tupperware and kept them in the fridge while we got the last item to send. That was a sealed copy of our ceremony, with our personally written vows, from our officiant. This way, she can be a part of our wedding day, enjoy a sweet treat, and hear the ceremony at her convenience from one of the ladies at her nursing home. We sent everything two day mail, and I called the home and gave instructions to open the packages immediately for her.

I got a call from her yesterday. She hasn't gotten the ceremony yet, but the corsage and cupcakes arrived. She's THRILLED!! She loves being able to touch the corsage (I explained it wouldn't die, and described it to her, emphasizing how it matched what my mom and FI's grandma would wear), and intends to wear it every day this week and into next week. The box arrived right as she was finishing dinner, so she was going to have half a cupcake for dessert (bless her, we brought her a cupcake in Nov. from the bakery, and despite her claims she'd "have a little piece" she darn near well licked the plate finishing it in one go!). She said my note mentioned something else coming, but she didn't quite understand it. I explained about the ceremony copy, and how not even FI and I know precisely what the personalized ceremony says, it's sort of a surprise for us. That started some crying, as well as more comments about how touched she was that we thought of her.

Even though my Grandma can't be there in person for my wedding on Saturday, I'm thrilled everything has gotten there and she can still be part of the day in spirit. I've made her happy- now I can enjoy my wedding!

  • That has to be one of the sweetest things I have ever read.  I love my grandmother more than anything and would be heartbroken if she couldn't come to the wedding.  This is so beautiful, your grandma is lucky to have a granddaughter like you!
  • @Chipmunk415 that is such a thoughtful and an awesome way to include your Grandma in the festivities even though she can't be there physically. You made me tear up a bit :)

  • @Chipmunk415 That's it.  There's absolutely no chance you have 'Evil Chipmunk' in you - it must be someone who steals your log in at times to write something a bit Snarky.

....That being said, I'm bawling over here and can feel the love you have for your grandmother.   Best wishes for your wedding and may your grandmother enjoy the ceremony.
  • That is one of the sweetest things I have ever seen on here!  What an awesome gesture.  That just made me smile big time.
  • That is such a great idea! One my grandmother won't be able to make it to my wedding either, nor will my fiance's grandmother. Both are in their 90s and are a long plane ride away. I was already planning on sending her a video of the wedding, but those additional gifts are so precious, I'm going to price out two more corsages so they can have them too!

  • Hooray!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • @blueeyes- DO IT!!

Totally will. My great grandpa cannot travel and will probably be in a home by then. My grandma is already in a home. I sent them both save the dates and will be sending them more stuff, this is just a brilliant idea. :)

  • Your grandma rocks! I'm glad you could make her feel like she was part of the ceremony.
  • What a thoughtful person you are. Seriously. I almost cried.
  • That was such a fantastic idea!! I'm also going to steal this… My grandfather won't be able to make it to our wedding, and I've been looking for ways to include him!!
  • I love that you did this! I have been feeling guilty that my 92 year old grandmother won't be able to attend the wedding and I wanted to do something special. Thank you for the ideas!

  • I lurk, but i had to come out and tell you that this made me happy.  All of my grandparents passed away years ago (I'm 46), and I would have given anything to have them at my wedding last March.  I think what you did was wonderful and so thoughtful and loving.  Your grandmother must be so proud of you, I know I would be if you were my granddaughter!

Oh, and I love what she wrote on the card, lol.  I giggled.  She sounds like a real card and a pleasure to know.

Happy wedding day to you and your FI.  It passes so fast, so enjoy every minute of it  I'm sure it will be as lovely as you are.
