Bridesmaids dress colour

I'm torn between black and champagne for bridesmaids dresses.

I prefer black because:
- It'll be cheaper to buy dresses off the rack (mismatched bridesmaids dresses) than pre-order bridesmaids dresses (they could even wear a black cocktail dress they already own); cost is a concern for me because many of my bridesmaids will already be travelling to come to the wedding
- It'll be easier for them
- They'll wear it again

However, I think that champagne may end up looking nicer in pictures. Our photographer told us that black and white ceremony pictures are generally nicer because you avoid all the clashing colours of guest clothes, which makes sense to us, so we're trying to imagine what the pictures will look like with black dresses. This wouldn't be an issue if we were getting married in the daytime, but our wedding is in the evening and it will be quite dark. I worry that there won't be enough contrast between the girls and the ambient light. I don't want the girls to look like blobs of black (except for their faces, arms, and legs of course).

What do you girls think? Would champagne look much nicer in pictures?

Edited for spelling

Re: Bridesmaids dress colour

  • I prefer champagne but black can be very nice. It can be brightened up with accessories or bouquets. Are the guys wearing black tuxes? That might be a lot of black. Have you had a budget conversation with the bridesmaids? Any other colors you're planning to have in color scheme? Google some pictures of black BM dresses to get an idea if you like the look too.

@Mitch617. Yes, I had the budget conversation with each of them individually before talking about dresses at all. Given that one of them has a very limited budget, we (fiance and I) thought that black would be a good option.

The guys will be wearing charcoal suits. It would be a lot of dark colours, but it's an evening winter wedding so I don't think it would be awkward. Our colour scheme will be very neutral. We really like the look of black BM dresses, our main concern are the evening pictures in black and white.

Our other idea was to do mismatched dresses in black and champagne tones.

  • I assume you already have a venue, so think about different backdrops of where photos will be taken. If you already have a photographer too I would tell him or her your concerns. Maybe your photog has some good ideas or has shot similar colors at night before.
  • @Mitch617 - thanks for the suggestions, I hadn't thought about asking the photographer!
  • I don`t think that them being in black would mean floating heads and hands if you had a good photographer.  Below are some pictures to help.

  • A relative of mine got married last fall & their colors were black & champagne. The BM wore cute knee length dresses that they had gotten at Banana Republic. To help add some detail to the outfit (because they were simple LBD that for once, the girls could wear again for almost anything) the bridge got the BM a large gold statement necklace from Charming Charlies I think (those were not their gifts). It looked really nice it added a some color to their outfit. If you did this You would have to know the necklines of your girls dresses to make sure that the necklace you pick out goes well with the different necklines. The easier option might be to find shawls in champagne to give to each girl. The shawl would add some color contrast along with their flowers (and add a little warmth since it will be a winter wedding).

I went to a wedding with their girls wore black (all different dresses of their choosing) and I thought it looked great, and pictures came out lovely.  They had red flowers, for some color.
  • I had my girls try on champagne dresses when we went shopping because that is one of our colors and it only looked good on the skin tone of one of the girls. Champagne can be a hard color to pull off. I would go with the black if I were you. It will be more flattering and easier to find something they like.
