NWR Birthday gifts?

Hello everyone! This is really random. BF has been spending every night for the past week or so in the basement clearly working with power tools (which I didn't even know he had!). At first I was like what the heck, because as a law student I don't have much free time, so we try to spend evenings together as much as possible. When I asked him what he was doing he said "Working on your birthday present--you're not allowed in the basement!" I would never dream of ruining the surprise he has planned (today's my birthday--so hopefully I get to find out soon!). It just got me thinking about what it could possibly be!

Have you ever gotten a handmade gift from your SO? Or given one?

    Happy Birthday!!!

Sort of but it wasn't really a gift. He took a piece of spare wood in our garage and used the dremel

I got him for Christmas to carve his (what will be our) last name into it. It was kind of cute. I don't think he's serious about actually using it though since it was just a quick project and he didn't put real effort into it.

One time he stuck a bunch of post it notes on the bathroom mirror in the shape of a heart and a flower. Kind of silly and waste of post it notes but I thought it was pretty adorable.

I've never given him a hand-made gift but I'm really excited for whatever your BF is making for you! Please share when you find out!

  • Um, FI and I make handmade gifts all the time.  He also proposed using a ring box that he made.

Given that FI is a rather advanced woodworker and I am a rather intermediate woodworker and advanced crafter, this is normal in our house :)

CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR PRESENT! :)

  • Happy Birthday!!!

H has never hand made anything for me before probably because he tells me all the time how un-crafty he is but I know he can be crafty if it's something that he is doing for a project on the house. He has made desks and tables before with his dad but I guess when it comes to a gift for me, I can why he may be a little nervous since it's not something he would say is simple.
  • Happy birthday!

BF hasn't gotten me any handmade gifts (he's not crafty at all), but I knitted him a dice bag last year. I'd knit him a scarf if I thought he'd ever wear it, but I'm not going to waste effort on something that would sit in the closet.
  • Thank you all for the birthday wishes! I will definitely update with details on the mysterious gift when I find out!

@KeptInStitches the first gift I ever gave BF was a scarf that I knit for him. He wore it every day for a month (I was touched) and then promptly lost it! He was so sad he didn't tell me for a week and even went down to CTA offices to check their lost and found. It's been forever and I'm still working on the replacement scarf.

@Blue&White he proposed with a ring box he made? that sounds so sweet! I would love to try woodworking one day. Do you do it just as a hobby? BF and I aren't that crafty, but for my birthday last year BF made me a dream catcher, which was really cute since I have a tendency to have intense dreams.

Happy birthday!! I can't wait to find out what your present is, that sounds awesome.

For our first anniversary, I made J his present. His family goes to Nova Scotia every year, and J collects as much sea glass as possible every time he goes. We have tons of sea glass all over the apartment as decor. He complains that he wishes it were more socially acceptable for men to wear jewelry because he wishes he could wear a cool necklace every day. So I borrowed a Dremel from a friend, looked up some tutorials on ye old internet, and drilled a hole in a sizeable piece of green sea glass so I could put it on a necklace. The whole thing cost about $10 to make, and he loves it.

  • Happy Birthday! Our first Christmas together, I painted a portrait of his dad, who had passed away a couple years previously. He was super touched that I did that.
  • Happy birthday!!! I never made a gift for FI and he has never made me one. Unless you consider the fact that he installed a paver patio in the backyard or that he is redoing the kitchen.

@Peaseblossom55 Redoing the kitchen might be the greatest gift of all time.

  • @phira I am pretty excited about it, he is refinishing the cabinets, installing a new countertop, redoing the backsplash and doing new kitchen floors.  Not sure when it will all be complete but it will be awesome.  The kitchen when we bought it was just fugly.

  • FI is so NOT crafty. He's never made me anything for my birthday but Valentine's Day 2013 he made the tastiest dinner ever, so even though he's not crafty he can cook.

Also he does a lot around the house, and that's a big gift!

  • @mbross3 yep, we do woodworking mainly as a hobby.  He tends to make more furniture (bigger) things and I tend to make smaller things (my specialty is scroll sawing, lol) so it's fun because we'll both be working on different projects at the same time.  We just moved to FL so we're in an apartment and can't woodwork until we have a house and it's lame.  We also need to find a house with a huge backyard so we can put in a detached 2 car garage for a shop...

@ollie08 you can help us find one of those come like...may, right?  WHY does no one in FL have yards?  And what are "horse communities"?  We seem to have a lot of them around here which seem to have decent yards.

  • @Blue - right?! The community I'm in has yards the size of postage stamps lol I just think it's a product of so much new construction in FL. It's about density to the builder/developers for sure. I've not heard of "horse communities", but I can imagine they allow the owners to keep horses on property? For bigger yards you'll have to look at older communities, or go with something in more rural areas for sure. And of course I'd be happy to help when May comes!

  • @ollie08 yea, the horse communities have some horses, lol.  And we don't have horses, and definitely don't want to have horse poop in our yard, but I just want a yard :)

I predict that once I have said yard I will start complaining about mowing it, but that's mainly because I'm allergic to fire ants and don't want to die.

Also, what's the painting with a twist place by you?  You can message it if you want.  My sis and I are going for her birthday sometime after my wedding :)  We may go in orlando, but we need options obviously.

  • @Blue - for sure!!!

We went to Coffee and Canvas - http://www.coffee-and-canvas.com/
It was fun. It's in Longwood though which is a trek, especially from where you are.

But Painting with A Twist is in Orlando by Universal - http://www.paintingwithatwist.com/Orlando
