Are flowers still appropriate for men?

My friend's dad has been in the hospital for quite some time. I wanted to send him something to cheer him up. I have no idea if he's restricted in food. His problems have been heart and lung related. So I want to get him something safe. To men typically appreciate flowers? Or does someone else have another idea?

Re: Are flowers still appropriate for men?

  • Depends on the man. My grandfather had the most beautiful rose bushes I've ever seen outside of botanical gardens.
That said I think its enough of a cultural norm to send flowers when one isn't well. Just don't send marigolds.

  • I agree that it would depend on the man. You could send a plant or something along the flower lines without being overly cutesy or floral.

When my dad was in the hospital, his brother sent him flowers that looked like a beer - it was a mug with that yellow jelly stuff and white carnations on top for foam. It was pretty great.

  • I think anyone would appreciate anything that would brighten up their hospital stay.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • When my dad was in the hospital, his work sent him a potted plant arrangement. Unlike cut flowers, it's still going strong, five years later! But I think flowers are fine too.
  • Found a sweet little gardenina bonzai tree. I'm going to send him that.

That is perfect. :) My great-grandpa was in the hospital and he said "I don't need no stinking flowers, I'm not dead yet". Haha. The things he appreciated the most were heartfelt cards and pictures he could put on the wall.

  • Hey, Just a heads up, last year I had lung surgery (they have a damn habit of collapsing for no reason) and was air-lifed to a 2nd hospital about 6 hrs away for the surgery. My local hospital I was allowed to have flowers and plants, the 2nd I was not. No flowers, no ferns, no ivy, nothing. Just make sure that the hospital will let him have flowers.

  • I'm glad you found something suitable! Most hospitals here will allow flowers and plants, provided the patient isn't in ICU or critical care, I'm not sure about there though.

Semi-related useless piece of information gleaned from my aunt who used to be a florist: it's considered bad luck and/or bad taste to send red and white arrangements to a hospital - red being the colour of blood, obviously, and white being the colour of the sheets/shroud used to cover the bodies of the deceased... Just thought I'd share because I am a mine of trivia.

  • He's in a long term care facility right now, no longer the hospital. So I believe the flowers should be acceptable.

  • SBmini - Those sunflowers look beautiful, but think twice. They produce lots of pollen. I brought home a sunflower bouquet once and within minutes I was congested and sneezing my head off. I had to keep them outside.
