Wedding Invitations & Paper

When to send invites?

The Knot says to send them at the 3 month mark. It looks like most people are sending at about 2 months before the wedding.

Is there a reason for the difference? Our RSVP deadline is a month before the wedding so that we have a cushion for late RSVP'ers and time to give the venue final counts.

8 weeks is usually best. Any longer, and you tend to deal with more people "forgetting" about the invite/RSVP ("Oh, I'll set this down over hee and deal with it later" and then they never do)

  • Does whether or not you send save the dates factor into how early you send the invites?

(I didn't send save the dates, because we are planning the wedding in a 5 month timeframe. I don't think our date has reached everyone yet through word of mouth.)

<div>Not really. The recommended time frame is 6-8 weeks, regardless of any mitigating factors. We personally sent our invites out 9 weeks before. I would definitely spread the word amongst your friends/families though about your date though. You don't have to make sure word of mouth gets to EVERYONE, but I'm sure most people would appreciate a heads up. </div>

Thanks. Eight weeks would put us right in the middle of Memorial Day weekend, so my goal is to get them out a little before that.

  • I think wedding websites say to send them out three months in advance just in case your invites are not ready. When you receive those monthly countdown emails and the three month reminder saying "send out your invitations" and you have not done anything yet, you don't have to panic. There is a good cushion of time between 3 months to 6 weeks before your wedding. You will still have plenty of time to create, order, design, put together, and send your invitations well before the 6 week deadline. I feel like they always have you do things in advance rather than suggesting waiting until the last minute, which is helpful!
  • I've seen the rule of thumb about allowing half the time between sending and requesting RSVP's, so if your RSVP deadline is a month out, you should send them 2 months out.

My family is notoriously late for everything, so we're sending them at ~3 months and requesting RSVP's 6 weeks prior just so I can be sure I have everyone in hand with a month to spare so I can tally, make any phone calls I need to stragglers, and get back with the caterer without stressing.

I am about to mail mine, for an end of May wedding - we are just under 3 months away.  My venue has limited rooms and they release our block to the public 2 months before the wedding, so I wanted to make sure to give people time to book a room if needed.

  • Our wedding is May 3 and we put the invites in the mail yesterday. Our RSVP date is April 11--and we didn't send save the dates. I think sending invites at 8 weeks with an RSVP date 3-4 weeks beforehand is fine.
