Gambler suing casino over $500k loss

edited March 2014 in Nevada-Las Vegas
This is pretty interesting:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/06/us/california-drunken-gambler-las-vegas-casino/

Apparently this guy had some drinks at airport, went to Downtown Grand, got drunk at dinner (which fortunately has a witness who is a law professor at UNLV), rolls up to the pai gow table at the casino and gambles for 17 hours straight taking out markers of $100k + $100k + $50k + $250k while downing even more drinks, slurring, dropping chips on the floor and not being able to tell the denominations apart.  He's suing to have the $500k in losses voided on the grounds that nevada gambling regulations state that casinos are prohibited from "permitting persons who are visibly intoxicated to participate in gaming activity" and from providing "complimentary service of intoxicating beverages in the casino area to persons who are visibly intoxicated."

Sounds like this dude drops tons of cash all around Vegas regularly so he may actually have a case.

  • I wish I could get my money back for all the times I've gambled drunk!

  • That's such a tricky situation. Like he is a grown man who got drunk and is suffering the consequences... BUT the casino also has to follow the regulations on serving alcohol and allowing such an intoxicated person to continue to gamble. I'm sure they do it daily - dealers probably see drunk people throw away a few hundred bucks all the time, but 500k is a BIG deal... like you said it sounds like this guy is a regular gambler and knows you can lose money, but really feels wronged. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out!

  • Yeah, my wife knows that if she wakes up at 7am and I'm not back to the room yet, either I'm sober and doing REALLY well, or she can go downstairs and find me drunk and down about a thousand lol.

  • Both the casino and the gambler were wrong.  I find it a little questionable that he remembers being offered a 20% discount on his 500,000 loan but doesn't remember gambling?  I think he needs to be accountable for his actions as an adult, but I also hope the casino gets fined or penalized somehow.

  • I agree this is sort of grey. Sure, he got wasted, but if I were a dealer and saw the guy fumbling and bumbling chips and not even knowing what he was setting down, I'd suggest he leave the table for a bit (or whatever they're supposed to do under casino policy).
