My BFF has turned into Jenny McCarthy

Dear Prudence,
One of my dearest friends has become a staunch anti-vaxxer. I've done my research from reputable sources and I firmly stand on the other side of the debate. Every conversation with her turns to the subject of the dangers of vaccines, genetically modified organisms, and processed foods. She is obsessed and brings it up at every opportunity. I read the articles she posts on Facebook and they make me ill. There is no research, it is all fear mongering, and this otherwise intelligent person eats it up! I want my friend back but I also feel like a jerk for thinking less of her for believing this stuff. How do I get past this?

  • Hide her on FB and change the conversation.  If her friend can't respect the other side and she still wants to keep her, she's got to stop it.  It's really no different from my religious friends.  We all know where we stand, so unless you actually want to have a debate, why are you talking about it?
  • I would have a lot of trouble maintaining this friendship.

  • i have a FB "friend" who is bordering on this (at least in terms of GMOs/"nutrition"/paleo diet/organic foods/crossfit/parenting) - I just blocked her posts, so I can't see the ridiculousness.

^^^ what's especially funny about Ms Healthier-than-thou is that she has silicone breast implants and constantly drinks Diet Coke.  You won't eat a disease-resistant tomatoes, but artificial sweeteners and silicone boobs are just fine?

Antivaxxing and anti-GMO aren't the same in my mind.  Avoiding GMOs doesn't hurt anyone, not vaxxing does.  I know  a lot of people that will cut off friends because they don't vax and feel it's unsafe for their kids to play together.

I have a friend that is all about the homeopathic remedies.  Have at it, but she's also had 4 rounds of antibiotics this winter.  I just smile and nod as she posts her DoTerra oils.

  • Avoiding GMOs isn't hurting anyone, true, but it does bespeak a certain stupidity that would be hard to accept in a friend.

  • I will argue that militant anti-GMO people are hurting others - if they get manage to whip enough people into an anti-GMO frenzy, it's going to eliminate jobs and medical advances that are a by-product of that research and industry. It's not to the severity of anti-vaxxers who are having a negative impact on public health, but it still impacts others.

Someone chooses not to eat GMO-products, fine. Someone goes on a crusade to ban all GMO items from the marketplace, I have an issue with that.

  • GMOs are somewhat necessary for feeding the humongous human population. And really, all food we eat now is a product of selective breeding. Carrots used to be white. However, I prefer to eat food that is non GMO simply because Monsanto are bastards who sue farmers for growing food that was cross pollinated from their fields and kill bees. We need bees.

I have a fb friend who believes in the Illuminati and posts about how the dark music videos and Pagan references in shows are associated with devil worship. And is also an anti vaxxer. With a baby. Ok crazy cakes.

Personally, my parents knew something was up with my brother months before he had the MMR vaccine. He has Autism.
