Wine Time!

With my nutty schedule, I started drinking a glass of champagne or wine every night to help calm my nerves and allow me to go to bed while it's still light out. Not that I need an excuse, but I am alone in a hotel. It doesn't always work, but I deserve it after a VERY long week. Good news is that I get to see my husband for the entire weekend! It's usually just 24 hours from Sat afternoon to Sun afternoon. So, cheers to everyone!!!!

    I love a good margarita!!!

  • I'm just having wine, sadly, but I also love a good margarita. DH wants to see his brother and SIL and crazy aunt and mama's-boy cousin this weekend, so I will be having a margarita at dinner. Or maybe several.

    But no granny!!

  • What's everyone's preferred wine? Grape, winery, appellation? Jellsdot what's on tap? :)

  • I'm a hardcore Cab Franc girl, but I'm VERY particular. It has to have a lot of that smoky tobacco quality. I also enjoy other bold, full-bodied reds.

For whites, I'm partial to Riesling -- we have great Riesling wines here in Ontario. I also love a good (French) Viognier, but they're hard to come by.

There aren't many varietals I dislike because I used to work at a winery, but I'm really not a Chardonnay girl, and straight Cabernet isn't my fave, either.

I tend to prefer Ontario wines because I like supporting the local wine community. However, I do like my French and Australian wines, too. I don't discriminate too much when I branch out to other regions/countries -- I'm more concerned about the varietal and vintage than the region (although, terroir makes a BIG difference).

  • I should drink some wine tonight.  Maybe it will make me sleep better.  I was up from 2am until almost 6. Then chef work me up and 7.  GRR.

I just realized that Big Bang Theory comes on at 7am here.  I didn't realize until 7:51pm.  Boo.

    I'm a pinot girl.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I have a bottle of mead on our hutch that FI are saving for our engage-iversary, which is tomorrow. After the crazy few weeks I've had at work (did I mention I finally have a real desk and cubicle again?), I can't wait to drink the hell out of that bottle. 16.8% abv for a tasty white wine? Yum.

  • I don't discriminate with vino ;) but I love a Delish margarita. I could REALLY use either right now, but I'm trying to be good. Sigh.

  • I'm an ABC drinker - Anything But Chardonnay!

I love pretty much all white wines. Sweet, dry, makes no difference to me. I think my favourite may be the Casillero del Diablo Gewurtztraminer, because it kinda tastes like litchis. And now I feel like a traitor for not picking a South African wine...

  • pumpkinsandturkeys And to think you were in my top 10 Knotties on here! Prior to FI I only drank Chardonnay and Cabernet, but he sneaks the occasional Pinot (Grigio or Noir) and Vioigner on occasion. Though I will admit that your wine choices aren't the same as mine I am sad that you're all the way in Ontario; FI and I will be in Quebec in September :(

  • @Jells2dot0 cheers !!

My personal favorite is a blend of white grapes (I am a sucker for a nice big glass of chilled white) called "Blanc de Blancs". It is oh-so-yummy and refresing, especially under the stars on a nice summer night :)

    Stuck in box-

Since I only have a mini-fridge in my room, I'm enjoying some of the finest Gallo Family Moscato that comes in a mini bottle four pack. I usually have Cooks champagne from the mini bottle four pack, but the grocery store couldn't be bothered to stock the shelf. They should know by now to anticipate my needs every Monday after work.

@afox007 -- Haha! Clearly, we do have different wine tastes, but I won't hold that against you ;) I don't *dislike* Chardonnay and Cab -- I just prefer others. Let's face it... when it comes to wine, (almost) anything is fine!

Have you ever been to Quebec before? I love it there! Whereabouts will you be?
If the laws/politics weren't so wonky and if FI wasn't so completely hopeless when it comes to speaking French, I'd move there in a heartbeat!

  • I love white wine. The drier, the better. I usually have Chardonnnay around, but my palate isn't terribly refined - I just go to my local liquor store and read reviews and ratings, then pick one based on that.
  • I'm a cab girl at heart, but I'd never snub my nose at any wine if I'm to be honest.

    Some of my faves include:

cheap - The Crusher (all varieties)
    cheapish - Conundrum (white blend)
mid - Clos du Val (cab)
highish - love all things Orin Swift & Stags Leap

  • @prettybirdy27 I am not a wine person either. I prefer champagne or mixed drinks. But, hey- I will take what I can get to get me through this business trip and based on what I've been drinking, my standards are not very high.

  • Mmmm I'm reading this at 9:35 CT and dying for a glass of wine now!

For reds, I like Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.  Blends are good too. There's this $8 blend from Coppola that FI and I drink like grape juice.  FI and I actually considered going to Chile for wineries on our honeymoon as there is very good "value" on Chilean wines.

Big fan of Reislings too, especially if they're from Germany, though we did find a V.Suttui from the Anderson Valley CA that's just perfect for us both.

I also dig Greek whites. No idea what grapes, but anytime I've ordered something Greek and white at a restaurant I've gone crazy over it!

  • I stick with white. I love reisling, or a good bubbly (Prosecco!)

Chardonnay is one of those things that I feel like people serve as a default white wine and whenever I get it, the first couple of sips I'm like "eww gross" and then I get used to it and it's fine. Every. Single. Time.

  • I'm a Moscato kinda girl myself. (moscato d'asti is my preference over regular moscato when I can) So good!

  • Moscato and Reislings are my favorite.  Chardonnay is to bitter for me and I would rather drink water/soft drinks than drink Chardonnay.  I don't like reds at all.

  • pumpkinsandturkeys  I've never been to Canada before and I actually have no idea where we will be. FI is supposed to play at some music festival somewhere in Quebec. I feel like this is one of those things I should figure out  ;)
    image
  • @afox007 -- probably Quebec City, Montreal, or Mont Tremblant -- those are the most popular places in PQ for music festivals. The whole province is beautiful, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it! However, be warned that Quebecers are craaaaaazy drivers, especially in Montreal.
