Is Divergent worth the time?

I've read the Twilight books and I enjoyed them, I read the Hunger Games books and while they were disturbing I liked them.  I am well above the age that these books are targeting (I'm 33).

Who has read the Divergent books and would you recommend them?  I normally read romance novels with an occasional foray into other genres.

Re: Is Divergent worth the time?

  • I choked through the first Twilight and hated it, never read the rest.  I love love love HP.  I'm pretty much a Hunger Games fangirl.

I have read the Divergent books and they were not nearly as good and well thought out as THG.  However, they're a good read and entertaining.  If you like teenagers making out, they're a little racier than THG.  I loved the first book, but the plot starts getting really strained as the author starts to try to explain how/why their dystopia exists.  I thought it was a lot more interesting in the beginning and then just started getting forced.

But if you like YA sci fi like I do, you probably won't regret reading them.  And I'm pretty sure I will still go see the movie.

  • They are a good (good not great) read. Definitely geared towards the pre-teen/teen crowd. Lots of twists and turns. I'm on the third book, and I'm not sure where it is going.
  • I haven't read the books, but I'm excited that I won passes to a free sneak preview of the movie for next Tuesday - the movie looks good!  I might read the books after I see the movie.

  • I hadn't heard of the Divergent series until I saw the preview for the movie. I find that I'm kind of a sucker for YA lit for easy read/entertainment factor so maybe I'll check them out. Have y'all read the Uglies series? I enjoyed those, too.

I enjoyed all three.  Of these three, Divergent was my least favorite (I have a sad, sick love of Twilight) but I enjoyed it quite a bit.  The movie definitely has potential as there are some very cool visuals described in the book and it looks like they cast Tris very well with Shailene Woodley.

  • I loved the books, and I can't wait for the movies! I'm a sucker for any story though. Love love love books.

  • I really enjoyed all three. But I am really into the 'brain porn' type of books that don't take much thought to read. To many text books read to want to try and understand everything.

  • I thought they were good, not great, but good through all three.  HG were amazing in book 1, pretty goo din book 2 but by book 3 it was a total WTF for me.  I felt they went downhill after book 1.  Divergent wasn't as good all round as HG, but they were consistent and stayed good throughout.

  • I read them - they were a good, quick read for me. I read both Twilight and HG as well, the Divergent series was my least favorite of the three, but I did enjoy reading them.

  • I loved the whole Divergent trilogy. I also read HG and Twilight. If I had to rank them in order of what I liked best I'd say: HG, Divergent, Twilight.

  • I really liked the first book. The second book - meh. I didn't even finish it.
  • Thanks everyone!  I'm still on the fence...  I found a Kindle bundle for all three  books at $15 so it isn't even a money issue but for some reason I can't commit.  lol

Harry Potter was my favorite YA series followed by Twilight.  Hunger Games was good but the third book was kind of like WTF...  It felt like she was just trying to kill off a bunch of people and I couldn't keep them all straight.  I had to reread the last few chapters once I reached the end because I couldn't believe I read it right the first time.

  • Nothing can beat Harry Potter. I agree about Hunger Games..the 3rd book was just hard to follow. I may need to re-read it just to make sure I have everything straight before the next movie.

I liked the Divergent series. It's definitely geared more towards pre-teens/teens, but an entertaining read.

The All Souls Trilogy (3rd book coming out this summer) was a cool read if you like vampires/witches.

  • I didn't read Twilight, I read Hunger Games and HP.

I liked the first book in the Divergent series but as the series and other books went on I kind of got annoyed with the main characters....by the end I just read it to finish it.

  • None of these books have remotely ANYTHING on Harry Potter. HP is one of my favorite book series of all time, YA or not.

Twilight was garbage and I couldn't finish the series. I did like HG. I read the first Divergent book and really just couldn't get into it.

  • I read Twilight in middle/high school and thought it was trite garbage and I haven't picked them up since. I really loved THG, and of course HP beats all other books.

I really liked Divergent and Insurgent but Allegiant made me want to throw the book across the room. Not from sadness or because the series ended but from sheer anger. To me, it felt like she had this awesome idea for a book (Divergent) and then once that became popular she decided to make it into a trilogy and had no idea where to go from there. The second book was good, but the third just made no sense, didn't serve any real purpose and just seemed like an "Oh crap I have to finish the story somewhow!" book.

If you like YA books, try reading Scott Westerfeld's books. He has several series but the best for you might be the Uglies series (Uglies, Pretties, Specials & Extras). I really love those books! They're some of my favorite.

  • Yes, @Klc09d! Someone who knows the Uglies series! I thought they were very entertaining.

  • @Niccirf I love all of his books, they're fantastic! I've always liked them because they made me think about something new every time I read them. In HS I liked the romance and the concepts of beauty, in college I actually wrote several papers about nature vs nurture in their world, and merit societies for my classes.

Actually one of the only tattoos I've ever thought about getting was from Uglies:

"What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful."

    I just love that quote!

I agree with @ClimbingBrideNY - read the first, couldn't finish the second. No interest in the movie. This is coming from a die hard YA reader and Youth Services librarian.
