Opinions please

Hi everyone! I need a few fair opinions on the look of this dress, because to my family I always look adorable. I boucht it in a sale from a store that bankrupted, so the dress only cost me 30 euros. I bought it at the time because I always wanted a mermaid dress, it was such a good deal, and later I could alter it to fit my taste.

But now I'm afraid the dress makes my boobs look huge and doesn't hide my tummy very well. Keep in mind that the dress hasn't been altered to fit me (that's why I'm actually holding it tighter with my hands)

So what do you think? should I sell it and buy a more forgiving dress?

Re: Opinions please

  • While the dress isn't my taste I do think that it gives you a good shape, especially once it is altered.  I am not a fan that you can see the two under seams going down the front of the dress though.  As for your tummy issue a good pair of spanx or something of that nature will help as well as having the dress altered correctly (even though you really don't have a tummy).

It seems that you have a large bust but I don't think the dress overly accentuates it.  I mean everything is being covered and nothing is going to fall out which is really your main concern.  And again, once it is altered and the top of the bust made to lay flat against your chest you will be surprised by how much smaller it will probably make you look.

It is always hard to get a really good feel for a dress when it hasn't been altered to your body.  Also, have you tried it on with accessories and a veil (if you want to wear one)?  You would be surprised how adding some jewelry and a hairpiece will really change the overall look of the dress.  I also think a belt or a sash would really add a lot to the dress and emphasize your tiny waist.

Depending on your budget I would take it to a seamstress and have her pin it to give you a better idea of what the fit would be.  Since you didn't spend a lot on the dress it may be worth going through alterations just to see what it would look like and if you still like it.

  • I would agree with everything that Maggie has said- the only thing I would add is do you love it? You look great in it, and I think it's worth getting it pinned and trying it on with jewelry, a veil, a belt, whatever accessories you think you might want. But if you add all that and you don't love it, then maybe it would be a good idea to keep looking...
  • I really think it looks great on you.

I don't think it accentuates your bust too much. I'm top heavy so I totally understand and I'm always paranoid about my boobs looking too big. But again, I think once tailored to you, it will be fantastic.
  • I agree with the PP. I think the alterations make a HUGE difference, I just had my first dress fitting and after pinning all of my anxiety (I'm large busted too with a 38D) was gone. Seamstresses work wonders!

And I do think accessories will make a difference - look into a sash, necklace, etc.
  • I will also add my voice in agreement. It looks great on you now, but it's obvious it doesn't fit you. I think that after it's altered to hug your body in the right places and you add some accessories, it will look so much better than it already does. If you love the dress but are just worried about it fitting right, I think visiting a seamstress for alterations is the thing to do.

"They say there's no such place... as Paradise. Even if you search to the ends of the Earth, there's nothing there. No matter how far you walk, it's always the same road. It just goes on and on. But, in spite of that... Why am I so driven to find it? A voice calls to me... It says, 'Search for Paradise.' " - Kiba, Wolf's Rain

  • I think it looks great on you.  For me, it is a little plain and I would probably look for a beaded sash or maybe some 'bolder' jewelery.

I agree with Maggie - have them at least pin it up so you can see if you like it.  Also if you're not 100%, nothing says you cannot make an appointment at another bridal salon to see if you can find something that you feel more comfortable in.

It's not my personal style, but I think it looks nice on you. In these photos, it does seem to accentuate your chest, but some proper alterations paired with the right bra should do the trick.

Also, nice job on the bargain!

  • I think it will look great once its fitted to you - add a great sash and necklace and BAM! Fantastic.

  • I agree that a seamstress can make the top a little more fitted & flattering. In regards to your tummy, you can always get spanx if you don't like how your tummy area looks in the dress. But if you decide to go that route, I would recommend wearing them when you go for alterations because I hear they can make a big difference in how a dress fits.

Congrats for you for finding a beautiful dress for such a steal!!!

  • I think the fit is fine, once you get it altered. But I agree with Maggie about the seams going down the front. Those shouldn't show like that. In my opinion, it makes it look a little cheap.
  • I don't like it, TBH.  I vote for putting this dress on eBay then shopping for a new dress.

  • dress looks good except for the seems showing down the front of the dress can you bling it up a bit to see how it would look.

are you in love with the dress is it something you cant take off and see yourself walking down the aisle in it?

is it something you like but are having second thoughts

if you are having second thoughts you might want to scratch the dress and start over again
  • Also, if you take it to a seamstress, either steam it or have it steamed first.  It'll look different (and I bet better!) when it isn't so rumpled.
  • I think it's fine!

Have you considered a sweetheart neckline? Somewhat surprising, but opening up a neckline and making it fit more to the natural curve of your body can be really flattering and can actually make one's chest look smaller.

  • I'm also not a fan of the seams going down the front. I'd talk to a seamstress and see if she could do anything about that. I like the dress overall though - you can definitely accessorize it!
