When to ask bridesmaids?

My fiance and I got engaged in November or 2013 and are getting married in October 2015. I am having 9 BM but I was wondering how soon is too soon to ask them? 4 of them are my sisters, one is my future sister-in-law, the rest are friends whom I've been friends with since high school and we have remained very close (we're all 23 now). I was thinking about a year and a half away from the wedding date. That way the girls will have time to save money since some are still in college. (it will give them about 6 or 7 months to save, dress shop said to give it 8 months to get their dress). Is this a good idea?

    I wouldn't ask anyone until you are about 9-10 months out from your wedding date.  Life happens and things change.  There have been many a bride on these boards that ask how to kick a BM out of their wedding since they are no longer friends or talk anymore.  You really never know how your friendships will play out from now until November or December.

    Also, make sure you ask them what their budget for a dress is....don't just pick out a $250 dress without speaking to them first.

    Don't ask more than ten months out. I asked 9 months out and on our wedding day my husband probably would have gotten rid of one groomsman and I would've gotten rid of two bridesmaids and asked a guy friend instead. Things change...especially while in college. If you ask them their budget they shouldn't have to spend too much time saving.

    I'm getting married June 2016, engaged last September (2013). FI planned on asking his best friend for the past 12 years to be his best man, but then HUGE drama happened and now they do not talk. 

    They had a solid 12 years of friendship and the best friend did something pretty stupid, so now they are not talking. Luckily, we haven't asked bridal party yet. 

    Anything can happen. Waiting until closer to the wedding date is a very smart move. All BM's have to do is buy a dress* (based on agreed upon budget) and show up to the wedding.
