Offbeat Weddings

Balloons

I wouldn't describe our wedding as offbeat but this was the only board that seemed fitting for the question I had!  I've been looking for alternatives to my bridesmaids carrying bouquets, in part because I'm really not looking to spend an arm and a leg on flowers for the big day.  I had already considered trying to incorporate balloons in someway because we are all about promoting a playful/fun environment at the reception, and then I got the idea that the bridesmaids (and groomsmen, for that matter) could each carry 2-3 balloons down the aisle.  Instead of hanging on to them, I think we could set something up to secure them to the arbor.  My main concern would be that if it is windy, they could be bouncing around obnoxiously.  Our wedding is in late October in the greater DC area, so the weather could be 70s+ or it could be 50, who knows.

Anyone have any experience with this or feedback in general?  This is the arbor in question:

Re: Balloons

  • Some balloons come on those plastic sticks so you can put them on tables. They wouldn't wave around as much!
  • I saw an image on Pinterest of people covering balloons in tulle to make them a bit fancier. Not directly related to your question but I found it so intriguing that I had to share!

I'd worry about the wind. In fact, we thought about decorating with them ourselves but given that it's Chicago in October, we passed on the idea. We'll be decorating the aisle with plastic pinwheels to take advantage of the likely wind.

I'm trying to keep flower costs down myself. I'm doing some decor with paper flowers (kusudama) but haven't decided what to do with bouquets. I'm curious about what you decide!
