Always check those credit card statements!

My fiance told me today that the balance on our card was high. We looked at it tonight and boy am I glad we did! First, a $700 hotel bill that SHOULD have been charged to my work's AMEX ended up on my credit card! Then, I discovered that for the past three months nakedwines.com has been charging me $40 a month. I don't know how I got on a frequent buyer program, but I want out! Contacted nakedwines for a refund and will be submitting an expense report tomorrow. All and all, I should be able to bring the balance down significantly through these oversights.

    That's a good catch!

I am always looking at my statements because I had one card not submit my full payment from the month before. I made a $50 payment and the balance was higher than I thought it should be and noticed they said I only made a $30 payment. I called them up immediately and got it fixed since according to my bank account, they took the full $50 out of it.
  • Good catch!

I was wondering why it hurt so much to pay my Amex this month (because I'm not a big spender) - upon reviewing my statement I realized I never got an expense check for a $475 plane ticket. If I hadn't been paying attention it may have just slipped by me.

  • ALWAYS!!! I'm an accountant so I take it a little too far and I make an excel spreadsheet each month into categories so I can see what I spend on eating out, clothes, groceries, etc and compare to prior months.

I've paid it in full each month for 5 years. Last month it slipped my mind and I was 2 days late. They hit me with a late fee and interest. I called them and they immediately refunded both without a question! I tell people to always ask for these things because the worst that will happen is they you no but more than likely they do it for you.

  • YES! I check mine every day. Last month, I happened to log in and catch fraud before the CC company did! Someone got a hold of my number and racked up almost $6K in audio equipment and a Zoosk membership. LOL

  • I look at my statements daily. It is a good little routine to get into and only takes a few minutes. I have had my identity stolen and it is NOT FUN to clear up. I have been incorrectly charged for things before as well- it is much easier to take care of when it is happening instead of months later.

Also, I find it helps me keep my spending in check throughout the month. Sometimes I look at my credit cards and see I am eating out too much, so I head to the grocery store. I put everything on a card and pay it off every month, that is what works best for me.

  • Funny story. . . My credit card number was stolen. I have a student card so the limit is really low and it was maxed out in a couple of hours while I was at work. The bank called me right away. The nice lady from the bank went through all the purchases and I had to tell her that no, I did not spend $1400 on strippers.
