Daughter wears wedding dress again, but already married!

No, it's not a PPD.  My daughter just called from Maryland.  Last night the Daughter's of the American Revolution (DAR) had their state formal banquet.  She was awarded State Outstanding Junior, and has been named a finalist for the DAR National Congress in June.  Juniors are members under the age of 35.  They traditionally wear white dresses to these special occasions.  Her debutant gown doesn't fit any more, but her wedding gown does!  (Wish I could still get into mine!  LOL!)  Mommy is very proud.

    Congratulations to her!!  My dress shop used to organize a yearly wine and cheese night to girls to re-wear their dress (or BM dresses if they weren't married).  Tickets were in support of Brest cancer research, so it was a charity event, but I thought it was a pretty cool way to get ladies back into their dresses again.

    Congrats!!

    Everyone keeps telling me it's so great I'm not getting a white dress because that means I can wear it again ... but honestly, I've never owned such a formal gown in my life and can't imagine wearing it for any other occasion, just because it's so formal.

    @jenna8984 I wish I could.  They seemed to stop doing it about 6 months before my wedding.  I haven't heard about it since I got married.  :(

    DAR is a very old ladies organization.  It is a genealogical society of ladies who are descended from patriots who assisted in founding the USA.  (In other words, the rabble rousers of 1776)  They assist in genealogy, historical preservation, supporting veterans, supporting history taught in our schools, welcoming new immigrants and new citizens, all sorts of stuff.  Here is their website.  The were an early feminist organization.

    Oh that's neat! I love US history, I took all my college electives in it. I would probably qualify since my family has been in New England for generations but I have no idea how I would find that out.

    I'm almost afraid to answer this, because it can become an all-consuming hobby that takes over your life!  Genealogy.  New England genealogy is probably the easiest, because they kept such good records.  Google genealogy USA, and you will get some ideas.  I believe that Ancestry.com has a lot of records on line.  DAR is very strict in demanding proof for your descent.  Most chapters of DAR would love to have a younger member.  It is also a great way to preserve your family lineage for your children and descendants.
    DH and I have been researching it, off and on, since our marriage. MIL loftily informed me that her family was related to the patriot Nathan Hale, who was executed as a  spy during the Revolution.
    She was being a pill about it, so I looked it up.  Guess what?  There were three men named Nathan Hale that served in the Revolution, and hers was the wrong one!

       We are active in community theater and my mom is a professional costumer. My dress will undoubtedly end up in a show.

    This! The DAR was always an organization I found really interesting, but I could never participate in as I am the great great granddaughter of Italian and Dutch immigrants who came over in the mid 19th century.

    How fun!  My grandma was a member of DAR and a few months ago I started to sign up, but I got lazy when I found out what I had to pay (my budget is pretty tight right now) but I really want to sign up because I love history and genealogy.

    I was always interested in history and genealogy.  I was surprised when I found my family went back that far in America.  I have lots of recent immigrants in my heritage, too.
    My children attended public school in Maryland.  One February they came home disappointed, because they were studying Black History in America, and they didn't have any African-Americans in their family.  I signed them up for Children of the American Revolution so they could learn about their own heritage, and be proud of it., Daughter is currently preparing the papers for her baby son, Simon, to join CAR.  Your family heritage is something important, no matter what it is.  DAR helps people recognize and preserve theirs.  I hope that someday soon you submit your application.

    I had a cousin who was very interested in genealogy...  She heard rumors that the family was descendants of a Mayflower passenger but we had no proof.  A few years ago for my Grandmother's 95th birthday she presented her with a little booklet proving the family rumor!  So on my Dad's side we come from Mayflower passenger George Soule, one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact.

    My sister studied the genealogy of our cherokee indian side. At the museum of the American Indian Manhattan they have great resources for it. She discovered that through my great grandmother on my mothers side we are direct descendants of Chief Joseph.
