Hi all!

I got a call earlier this week that my wedding dress has arrived - woohoo!  I was ridiculously excited.  I feel like a million bucks in this dress.  Anyway, the boutique I bought the dress from doesn't do alterations so I'll be picking it up and storing it at my mom's house until I'm ready to go in for alterations.  The wedding isn't until October, so does anyone have tips on storage between now and the big day?  The dress is satin with a lace overlay, if that impacts the advice at all.

Thanks :)

Re: Dress Storage Tips - Pre-wedding

  • Put the dress in a breathable bag away from sunlight. Somefabrics your supposed tto keep laid down because they can stretch but Idk if that applies to satin and lace.
  • Omg I'm in the same boat (even an Oct wedding!).

    I just have mine in a fabric garment bag hanging on the back of the closet.
  • My dress is hanging in its breathable bag on a hook in front of our closet. Does anyone have their train hooked on the hanger?
  • @lookame3639 Yeah I think I will have to ask the boutique when I pick it up about the laying it down piece... that will make storage a bit more of a challenge.

    @Jennycolada hooray October brides! :)
  • @kla728 I read that heavily beaded dresses, silks and other delicate fabrics need laid down, 100% polyester dresses can stay hung since polyester is tough.
  • I'd still ask though since you never know (we also dont havetthe space to lay down a large dress, plus I have a cat who will lay on it and a dog who will use it as a blanket)
  • Ask the bridal shop. You may also be able to see if the shop can hold onto it until you are ready to start alterations. My dress came in 2 months earlier than I needed it and they were able to hold onto it there for me. Although a month or two is easier than 6 months.

    Heavier dresses should be laid flat if possible. I know that's usually hard to do. I figure the best spot for that, where you may have space and it won't be disturbed, would be under a bed. If bridal shop wasn't able to hold mine, I was going to store it at my FMIL's house under bed in her spare bedroom. My dogs lay under my bed, so I didn't want to put it there.

  • I have an October wedding too! (Yay!)

    My dress isn't exceptionally heavy, but I had been told by a few people to lay it flat, so it's living in a breathable bag under the bed in the guest room, until it's needed for alterations and stuff. :)

  • I had my dress a year before I needed to get alterations. I was really concerned about storing it that long. I put it in a breathable bag and then kept it under the bed in our guest room. Under the bed is probably the best place to keep it because it can lay flat and it's out of any sunlight that could potentially fade it.

  • Hmmm my mom has cats, which I am allergic to, so under the bed is probably not a good option in that case.  I think this means it might be coming home and FI will just have to be on good behavior.  He has amazing self control so I'm not too concerned there... more likely issue will be me wanting to look at it all the time lol.
  • mine is in a breathable garment bag in my closet, train hooked on the hanger..... tulle and chantilly lace.

    yay october weddings!!
