Carrying Dress on plane

I have flown a lot but never with a wedding dress. What are you carrying your dress in on the plane? I will not check my gown:)

Re: Carrying Dress on plane

  • I have bought a box that is the suitable size to fit in the overhead containers. I'm in the uk and the site I used was emptybox.co.uk they have a travel section. I had to call the airline to ask about having my dress as hand luggage and they have said I can only take it on as hand luggage if I don't take any other carry on! (Virgin Atlantic)
  • thank you!  We are using Southwest Airlines, I called and they said i could carry it on as long as it fits the size of a carry on.

  • That's great of them, shame virgin won't make an exception. My fiancé is just going to use my cabin case as his hand luggage going over and one of our guests will bring back my dress for me. It's all very exciting!
  • i talked to a flight attendant who works for us airways and she said that if you are flying coach and bring on a wedding dress they will totally hold your dress in first class for you (where first class jackets are normally stored) if there's room or in the overhead in first class no problem. i'm thinking about upgrading to first class on our flight so that i don't have to worry.
  • We dont have First Class on Southwest, the only good thing for me is we will board with family boarding, but they said it has to fit with the baggage size requirements ...im hoping that just the bag that i have my dress in will work, b/c i cant find anything else to put it in

  • Just a tip, the gal at the dress shop I bought my dress said to turn your dress inside out so that if the TSA wants to touch it it will be on the inside of the dress not the outside

  • what a great idea! once i get it to the hotel im going to iron the tulle underneath it again, i need to call to see if they have a steamer...i dont know how to post a pic on here or i would show my dress its very poofy LOL

  • I don't have a dress yet, but it will definitely be in a manageable size box for cabin luggage, like a light beach dress type, simply because I don't like the stress of flying as it is and can't imagine how much worrying and stress it would be for me about a huge box with a dress! In case I do end up with a big dress then I'll still stuff it as small box as possible... and then one thing I'll do for sure is buy and pack a handheld mini steamer, in case hotel doesn't have any, I had to once attend a wedding in a creased dress because I couldn't find an iron in time in a hotel, so I'm not leaving this to chance for my own wedding..

  • An extra seat is an additional option for anyone flying Southwest whose dress is too large to fit in the bin or that doesn't want it folded:

  • we have 5 of us flying, we are max budget for flights so im not purchasing another ticket:) but thank you tho.
Im trying to think how we could do a box to get on the plane, everyone one ( besides the baby) will be bringing the two carry on's allowed, so i would have to check the box. I think my only option is to bring it in a garmet bag and hope for the best.

  • i looked at the box site and southwest's bag restriction is 10x16x24 which is hard to find LOL!

  • Not sure if this helps but I'm hoping to test using one of these!!
Not bought one yet so I'm not sure how a dress will fit in it but its just a thought! :)
  • that looks great! ill have to keep looking at it

  • the last one looks perfect!

  • I flew on feb 10 with alligent n all was good put my dress in the over head compartment, n I had a big dress fit fine! No problems what so ever
  • The shop where I bought my dress from recommend buying the biggest hand luggage bag you're allowed on your flight. They said if I take the bag when I go to pick up my dress they will pack it for me so that it doesn't crease. But as I'm travelling with Virgin from the UK, they seem to say it will count as my hand luggage.
  • I'm flying American and they said just to bring it on and they would stick in the first class closet.
  • we are going to be one of the first few sections to board on southwest so hopefully the flight attendant will be nice and help us find a spot

Remain cautious the entire time you are travelling with your dress. I got it through a three hour flight but then at check-in at the hotel...ran over it with my luggage. It ripped the dress bag and left a HUGE black streak down the train of the silk dress. I nearly threw up.

I blew a half day trying to find a place that would clean silk in a hurry, but every place said they had to send it to LA and it would be three days. I nearly had a meltdown before heading back to the Venetian to regroup and make some calls instead of driving around. Out of desperation I called the in-house dry cleaning (I had avoided it because I assumed it would cost an arm and a leg) and they:

1: came to pick the dress up within 10 minutes
2: had it back that night cleaned AND steamed
3: they did it for under $30

I started to cry when they came back with it. Lesson learned: watch your dress the entire trip and, should something happen: remember the best option to clean might be right under your nose.

  • @kazzy I threw up a little reading about what happened to your dress. I'm glad they were able to fix it so quickly at the hotel.

  • Im shipping mine all the way from Australia to Vegas. I keep having nightmares of my dress floating in the pacific ocean somewhere. I will be on edge til I see her in Vegas. I have set up for the shipping to email me at every "pit stop" the dress makes. *Fingers Crossed*.

I shipped mine via Fed Ex to Fit for a Bride.  Got there no problem.  She steamed it and delivered it to my hotel suite at the Bellagio.  I didn't want to have to worry about it on the plane.  I shipped it a week in advance so it had time to make it here.  It got there overnight.
