So, for a bit of back story - I wrote about a friend that was upset that her friends decided that due to so many weddings this year, they wouldn't buy each other Bridal shower gifts. Alice was upset because she felt that gifts were basically mandatory if you were in or were going to a wedding.

Well, today I woke up to yet another email, with Alice spouting her wedding woes...She is exhausted from registering(?), she is exhausted from her stag and doe prep, there was bridal shower drama that she didn't elaborate on (and im not asking...). I am flabbergasted and yet again, don't know how to reply to Alice without saying 'you're a greedy cow, bugger off!'  She has such a lack of etiquette and she thinks that what she is doing is ok -

* Throwing her own bridal shower

* putting 'Monetary Gifts Only' on invite

* throwing her and FI a wedding fundraiser to pay for a wedding they obviously cannot afford

* Registering for her bridal shower and having too many big ticket items (why have a registry if you demand cash only?)

* she is making shirts for her family and friends to wear at the stag and doe (so everyone knows who the wedding slaves are) and telling me she is exhausted from doing it (then don't do it! Personalised shirts aren't mandatory...)

THEN she asked me if I find my wedding planning fun or stressful...um, my wedding planning is great...her's gives me chest pain...

RANT OVER! thanks for reading and letting me vent :)

  • I remember your first post.

This etiquette train wreck just keeps getting better.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Thanks for keeping us updated on this wedding wreck!
  • Wow! Keep us posted! Thanks for the update! She sounds very speshal
  • What exactly is a "wedding fundraiser" ?
  • What exactly is a "wedding fundraiser" ?
That's what the "Stag & Doe" party is. People buy tickets to attend, and there are sometimes door prizes that get raffled off. It's a big party on the surface, but it's basically a gigantic fundraiser to help pay for the wedding.

Some people argue that they are common in their area and think that makes it okay. It's not.
  • EW.  But fun to read about because it's not happening to me (my sympathies, OP). Keep us posted. :)
  • Like you said, if it's so exhausting, don't do it.
She's choosing to wear herself out. I have no sympathy, either.

  • My best friend, her sister and their mother all got invited to a bridal shower a few years ago that we STILL make fun of. The wording was just fantastic:

"Please join us for a money bridal shower for [fiancée of a random cousin they had met twice]".

If this Alice is really struggling to pay for her wedding this would be an excellent way for her to raise some money super fast! (as I roll my eyes right out of my head)

  • Oh boy, by time this wedding happens it will be amazing if it does happen.

  • Stag and does are common in my area (I still think they're tacky). Of the whole 2 that I've actually attended the close family and WP were wearing shirts that said things like "Father of the Bride", "Maid of Honour" "Usher" etc

  • Ugh...these people always kill me. If Alice can't afford to host a wedding - why is she hosting a shower on top of that and spending money on custom t-shirts? Do these people not understand...?? Argh...of course they don't...
  • Update!!! Alice sent me her registry link... (Now keep in mind she only invited 120 people to the wedding and requesting cash only on invites...) I was bored at work so added up the registry...she has 120 items totalling $6710.00...

I was going to buy her the $10 meat tenderizer but its already discontinued!! I was devastated!! Guess ill just get her the lemon squeezer...:)

Well - who can't use a good lemon squeezer?  That should last a lifetime and she can think of you everytime she uses it.  How speshul!

Gosh, I knew there was something I forgot to put on my registry when I got married.  A lemon squeezer, how have I lived without one?
  • Yeah, I have no sympathy for people like this. She sucks.

I do make lemonade from scratch occasionally but I just use my hands.  *shrugs*  I like my alcohol mixed by other people.
  • I emailed Alice back. I just answered her question stating my wedding planning has been fun and if she's stressed/exhausted with 6 months to go until her wedding, she should re-evaluate her plans...
