Do these invites match the formality of my event?

This is the first invite that I have found that both FI and I like.  (Link to Invite) We can use "B" as the letter because my parents are hosting and our last name starts with B, also FI's last name starts with "B".

Our event is in the ballroom (fireplace room for the social hour) of a private country club (inside and outside look formal). All indoors in winter (December 27th) and evening. It will be beautifully decorated (venue decorates for Christmas and New Years, we will simply be using their decorations). Dinner options will be steak and salmon with a limited bar (beer and wine). Groomsmen/Groom will probably be wearing tuxes and bridesmaids floor length dresses in dark blue. There is a simple dress code for the venue that guests will be informed of (no denim or athletic clothes, collared shirts for men, no short-shorts). We don't much care what people wear at all! Just that they follow the dress code (that is pretty easy). It turns out if they don't, they won't get kicked out like we originally thought, but if we fail to inform them of the dress code we get charged (rules changed this year, used to be charged no matter what).

Also, I can't tell, can anyone tell if it already has writing on the RSVP card? That would be silly, but I'm surprised I can't zoom in or see any more info about it.

I'm personally not a fan of black envelopes, but there is nothing wrong with them.  Do be aware that the square invitations will cost you more to mail.
If you both love this invitation, it would be fine for your wedding.
The most formal invitations are white or ecru with raised letters and no color at all.  If that's not your taste, go with these, or something else you like.
This is a kit that you print yourself, not a custom order place.  I do wonder how you address these?  Maybe other brides who have used black envelopes will have an idea.  Now, don't you dare use sticky labels!  Please don't use their horrible wording, but that is easily fixed.

PS.  Here is a design by Vistaprint you might like.  I would get the envelopes from an office supply store.http://www.vistaprint.com/vp/ns/easypath/studio.aspx?pf_id=A42&combo_id=186269&referer=http://www.vistaprint.com/gallery/MEEAAAABADoAAAA=/invitations-announcements/black-damask.aspx?filter=24:10074|

  • I think the outside envelope is white. You can just barely see them on the right. The inner thing that folds is black, so I guess we just wouldn't address the inner envelopes? I would never dream of stickies. I hand wrote our stds, return address and all! :)

Thanks for your response! I do like the Vista print ones, but fi didn't. I'll have to coax out why. He has a hard time explaining why he likes/dislikes certain things.

  • I just think it is nice when THEY do the work for you.  We used them for daughter's wedding, and we had lots of compliments.  They have other black and white lacy designs.
You can sleep, can you, dear?  You are in my thoughts.

  • I think the formality is fine, especially since guests will use the venue and time of day to judge formality as well. I will second the warning about extra postage for squares though. That's a pretty unnecessary place to spend extra money, IMO.

  • who cares about extra postage?  say you send 100 invites...we are talking 20 bucks.

It may not be a big deal but it is still worth noting because a lot of people don't realize that square invites cost more then rectangular invites.  Best to not be surprised when you go to the post office to buy your postage.

  • OP, black and white is always a classic look and I think they will reflect the formality of your event just fine.  Also the time of day and venue will help to show the formality of your event as well.  I think if you and your FI like them, then you should get them.

  • @maggie0829 agree that it's something you should know...but i do not think it should be a factor in deciding which invites to get, as the pp suggested

You're assuming that it will only be a small price difference though. That's not always the case and so for someone on a tight budget it could definitely make a difference.

Based just on the weight of my invitations it should have been $0.91 to send them. Because they were square and were a little thick in the middle it ended up being $2.32 instead. If you are mailing 100 invitations that's a $141 difference. That could definitely impact someone's decision making process.

  • wow $2.32!  regardless, the conversation was square vs rectangular, not thickness, bulges, inconsistent usps employees, and whatever other factors caused your postage to be so dang expensive.  i mailed one invite via certified mail and it cost like $1.30 extra, does it make sense to factor that into the analysis?  or what about if these happen to be going to hong kong, should we build that in, too?

you raise a good point though, postage is certainly tricky and i hate that you can't say for sure what it will be even though they list parameters online.

$141 would not have bothered my given how much my invitations cost, but i can definitely see it affecting someones decision.
  • CMGragain thanks again for your input! You are wonderful. I was having trouble falling asleep last night. I'm home visiting, so a new bed and my cat decided it was play time on my bed! Can't get mad because I only see her a few weeks out of the year and FI has been taking care of her.

Thanks everyone for the warning about postage and encouragement. We will take some time to think about it and maybe try to estimate the postage in some way.

  • Hi...i actually used this kit for my invites. We are getting married in a castle at 2pm.

Anyway i didn't like the lettering at the top so I bought a small stamp and embossed it light blue. I also stamped/embossed some fairytale quotes on the backs of the envelopes and i sealed both the invites and the envelopes with a gold wax seal. Now me doing this probably dropped the formality of the invites but that's ok...
  • Not for any of us to judge how much of a price difference would be a deal breaker for anyone. Personally, if I could get an invite I loved just as much in a rectangle rather than a square, that extra postage would be a giant waste of money - even if it was only $20. That's another $20 I can spend elsewhere on things that matter more to me than having a trendier shape for my invitations. Nobody said "OMG DON'T DO IT, THEY'RE SQUAAAAARE!" It was just a point to be aware of.
