Our surnames sound horrendous together!

FI and I are getting married in November of this year, and we agreed that we would double barrel our names (without the hyphen) and just see which may sounds better to see what order they would come in. We just sat down to get the order sorted and realised that no matter what way round we do, both sound equally horrendous. FI absolutely wants to have the same surname as me, but doesn't want to take my surname by itself, and we don't want to have a completely unrelated name either.
The only way of combining the names we have that isn't totally horrible would be MacSkine (which would be pronounced Mac-skin) and I have to say I'm not keep on that either.

What do you guys think of MacSkine? I don't like it much, but I might grow used to it? I'm really not sure. FI quite likes it.

  • If you do not like it have you thought of jumbling the letters from both names together to get a new name.

  • When I read that (surname) out loud it came out like "Mexican," which could be a good or bad thing. People would probably mispronounce it a lot, but it would be easy to correct, "No.... MacSkine, like Mexican."

@Artemischeif I might be wrong, but I don't think it's supposed to be pronounced like Mexican. But that's probably an accent thing.

I have to say, I'm not partial on MacSkine myself, but if you think it will grow on you, I'd go for it. McSkene might be better, since that is an actual surname.

What my FI and I are doing is taking part of both of our surnames, and using them. His middle name is Koenraad and mine is Elspeth, and we are going to have Epp Koen as our surname, so you could do something like that if you fancied.

My sister and her partner discovered that they have great-grandmother's with the same first name, which was common at the time, but is almost unheard of now, and if they get married, that first name is what they are going to use as their surname. So that's another option.

PP's suggestion of just jumbling up the letters could also work.

With surnames, you can basically do whatever you like. You might get some odd looks, but people will get used to it eventually.
