Jumping the Broom

Quick question ladies....I am bi-racial but identify mostly with my African American side and my groom is white.  As part of our ceremony we are going to "jump the broom" as is tradition in the African-American community.  But because of our racial mixture we will have many people attending on both sides who are unfamiliar with this custom and its significance.  We want a quick ceremony so we were debating on just putting a brief history of the custom in the program.  But we aren't too sure people will read it and I personally don't like being at a wedding where they are doing things and I don't know what's going on LOL.  We also thought about having the pastor give an explanation rather than just announcing what we are about to do.  What do you ladies think?  Will a description in the program be enough or should we have the pastor give an explanation?

I think the pastor saying a quick explanation will be fine. Its pretty simple only takes about 2 sentences so its nothing that will add on time or seem out of place.

We did a handfasting and the minister incorporated just a bit of history of this tradition of "tying the knot" so our attendants would know. I thought people would find it strange, but everyone loved it.

Awesome!!! Yeah I think we will have the pastor say a little something.  It does make it nicer when everyone know what's going on (even those who don't read the program LOL).Laughing

Hey date twin!  We're also jumping the broom and we're doing both a little blurb in the program for those who are actually going to read it and the officiant will also say a short thing or two of the signifcance of the tradition.  Here's what I put in the program:

During slavery our ancestors sought the legitimacy of marriage by jumping over the broom and into the bonds of domesticity.  For our ancestors, this small ritual was a legal and bonding act connecting them with the heritage of the homeland and giving legitimacy, dignity, and strength to their unions.  This broom ceremony represents the joining of two families, it's showing respect, and paying homage to those who came before us and paved the way.
