Rehearsal Question

So I just talked to my venue about a rehearsal. It seems they would prefer a rehearsal from 2:30-3pm. This would be on a Friday, but December 26th (my wedding party will be in town by then and none will be working). How would we do the rehearsal dinner? Should I push back at my venue to see if we can do it at 4pm so a more reasonable time for dinner?

Re: Rehearsal Question

  • You could try, but if they won't budge, maybe do a more casual dinner or heavy apps (enough to make a meal if people are hungry). You can then do some type of after party if you like, but...
I'd look at it as...you will be able to get plenty of rest the night before your wedding because you won't have to be out late at your rehearsal!
  • I'd see if they can push back at all, to 4 or 4.30, and then just have an early dinner.

Otherwise, your options are a REALLY early dinner, doing heavy apps and hors d'oeuvres, or pushing it up and doing it earlier and then having a rehearsal lunch.

If you can't push it back, I'd still host a late lunch or early dinner immediately following. I'm one of those weirdos that can always eat. I don't care what time of day it is.
  • I think as long as people know about it they can plan -skip lunch or have a big brunch type of thing.

This is what we are doing. Our wedding is on a Sunday, meaning we want to do the rehearsal on Saturday. Because it is a 1-event-at-a-time venue, they have told us that we would have to do it at noon at the latest, so we are having a rehearsal lunch.

If you can't push it back, I think it would be fine to do a late lunch or early dinner. I think as long as you have enough food, people will be happy. You could always start with apps and drinks and slowly progress to dinner (still early, but you don't have to eat a meal right at 3:30).

I wouldn't mind- as long as there is enough food, I am more than happy!

We can basically decide between doing rehearsal brunch/lunch around noon OR late lunch/early dinner around 3. We need to find out what my in-laws prefer, but we'll likely do brunch. Honestly, we kind of like that, so we can relax the rest of the day (or, you know, pretend to), and we can order take-out for our last dinner together as unmarried people.

Alternatively, you can do food before the rehearsal--rehearsal lunch followed by the rehearsal.

My brother and ex-SIL had to have their rehearsal pretty early in the day, the day before their wedding. I honestly wish my parents had just decided to do a rehearsal lunch right after that, but instead, everyone had to drive aaaaall the way home (the wedding venue was about an hour from, like, everyone), and the rehearsal dinner was at a relative's house later in the evening (about 7 hours after the rehearsal). I think it's because my parents are really used to rehearsal dinners were ALL family members and out of town guests are invited, so there were almost as many people there as there were at the wedding. But I think the wedding party would have been a lot happier to just get lunch right afterwards, and then have the evening to themselves.

So basically, 3:30pm lunch/dinner might seem a little awkward, but it's better than making people wait so you can have it at "dinner time."

  • Thanks ladies for the advice. I will have to talk to my FI and see what he prefers. We might do the lunch before and then rehearsal. We were talking about doing a family dinner the night before since we have so many people from out of town so we will have to figure that out. We have plenty of time, but I'm just trying to make sure I do things right and sometimes that takes planning :)

  • If your ceremony is traditional, you can skip a rehearsal. Then you can host whoever you want, however you want.

I'd love to do that, but Uncle Pastor really really wants a rehearsal and he has done a few weddings, so I'll let him do it. If people don't show, no skin off my nose (and he won't care, he mostly wants us there).
