Wedding band disaster!

In January we met with the same jeweler who custom made my engagement ring. We gave him a real picture of a "braided" diamond wedding band (vero wang) that we love and wanted him to "sandwich" it between 2  micropave/diamond bands. We also wanted him to add an amethyst stone to the band (outside part facing out). He said no problem! We emailed him the picture as we stood in front of him and we also drew it up for his designer out in California. He told us 3 weeks!

After 11 weeks, we finally got the call it was in yesterday!! It was horrendous!!! The outside bands were beautiful but the braid inside looked like a bunch of silver wire...no pave/no diamonds. The braid also went completely around the ring! It looked like costume jewelry! And...was the wrong size!!!

The salesman we spoke to (our jeweler is on vacation until tomorrow) told us not to worry about it...it will get done! Ummmm.....why would we not worry? It was suppose to be DONE already!!! We dont have another 11 weeks! Our wedding is in 6! We are going in tomorrow to meet with our jeweler (store manager). Who knows what he will say/do! What can I reasonable expect?? A loaner? ugh!

Boy....things just keep looking up! :(

  • I think you should try to find someone who does their design work in-house. Although, and I don't know why they wouldn't have told you this, you probably don't want an amethyst in a ring you will be wearing every day. They're just too soft and it will be scratched all to hell within a few years at best.

  • Jared does custom designs. They walk you through each step so first is the drawn design consultation, then they email you a digital rendering of your design. Once everything is approved they begin the wax mold which once that is finished you get a call to come back and check it out.ItIt's a basic design though in colored wax so you won't see any diamonds or anything in it but you'd be able to say you don't like the design from there. After that's all said and done with they begin working on the metal ring, place diamonds ect. Custom work takes awhile to do though. They require time to get the diamonds and a reputable storewill at least send you a diigital rendering of your ring to see if the design is correct.

The only viable stones for everyday wear are diamonds and sapphires. Rubies and emeralds can possibly work if you don't use your hands to much but anything else is to soft and will get scratched, cracked, damaged to easily.
  • I would go to a new jeweler ASAP.

  • I would be having a panic attack over this one! The jeweler should be ashamed of himself! I am curious to know what he says!

  • From your description, I would have expected braid all the way around, no diamonds on the braid.

Sizing isn't hard they can do that in a day. I think you should focus on making sure you are on the same page and getting a realistic timeframe. If they can't fix it in 6 weeks, you might want to hold onto if now and have it fixed post wedding.

This is crap... my ring is a trio of aquas... there are PLENTY of women on here that do not have diamonds or sapphires and manage to keep their rings nice....

  • I'm not saying you can't keep other stones nice. I'm saying other stones are softer have more ability to crack or scratch, especially if you wear it all the time and don't take the ring off for washing or chores. You can still do other stones (i had a sapphire and considered aqua for awhile) it's just not highly suggested. (FI is a certified gemologist he talks about this stuff all the time)

@phira I knew there was another stone that was on the 9 scale that i was forgetting. temporary memory lapse woops

@lookame3639 No worries!! I used to be obsessed with birthstones; mine's sapphire and my childhood best friend's is ruby. So that's, like, the one thing I know about anything.

  • My fiance received a call bright and early this morning from our jeweler (manager). He is disgusted about the ring. He said it was completely unacceptable and there is no question that it is going back ASAP. He said it WILL be done with plenty of time to spare! He also said that there was no good reason that the "braid is as it is" because he sent the actual picture of the one we want replicated with a one dimension drawing and verbal description (I saw the one he drew and described-spot on). He will be sending us a CAD pic for approval before sending it to his guy.

@SaraBrideSoon...I am still nervous but must admit, I feel much better that our jeweler is disgusted with it! He is also very very mad (I like that)! :) My fiance didnt even lodge is complaints before jeweler started his.

@artbyallie...The amethyst is not the main stone. It is actually so small that it can hardly be seen. Its just a private "nod" between us-represents the month we first kissed and shared our feelings for each other. Its on the "outside" of the band snuggled between other diamonds.

@Starmoon44...sorry for lack of description here. Our jeweler was very aware of the details. His guy could not have looked at the actual photo but only the one dimensional drawing. :( Its going back. I guess that if its not done in time, they are going to have to give me something to use. I really hope not>I dont want a stand in! It def. wouldnt be the same.

I am going to try to post a pic of the braid. If I can figure out how! :/

Yahoo! I think I figured out how to load pics! Hope you see it. Pic of the braid (its a Vera Wang design) and shows basically the band that should be on top and bottom (braid sandwiched between).

This is one pic that was sent to the jewelers guy. Don't know how he got it wrong.

    edited: removed wrong pic :/

Differing opinion here: I work in a jewelry store and we do custom work all the time, exactly the kind that you've described.  The biggest mistake is that you weren't sent a rendering for approval before the ring was manufactured.  The second mistake is that the salesman called you before the manager was able to see the ring (and if he was going to be back in a day or two, they should have just waited).

11 weeks is also absurd.  These things should take 3 weeks at the absolute max.

Take a deep breath and try not to freak out.  I can't speak for all jewelry stores but *most* privately owned ones will move heaven and earth to get this right for you.  I think you're going to be just fine.

And PS- don't sweat the softness of the stones you choose to add to your ring.  Yes, some are softer than others and may scratch or become damaged over time.  But your jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed and lived in, not put in a box or worn fearfully because something *might* happen to it.  If your amethyst becomes worn out over time, you simply replace it (exactly the same way you'd replace any other worn or damaged object in your life).

  • ^^I agree with @Mandafly84 as well (in fact, I also work in a jewelry store that does custom design in house, though our timeline is between 4-8 weeks dependent on detail; redoing a ring we already made would take around 2 however).

I am still confused on how OP's ring came out so wrong, especially if the local guy can send you a CAD drawing. Why didn't he send one to whoever made the thing in the first place? This is why I love our system at my job. The owner himself consults with the customer, designs the ring/jewelry in a CAD system and we send the resulting rendering to the customer for a go-ahead. Then and only then is the ring cast, set, polished, etc. All of which also happens at our store. A maximum of 4 people ever work on each piece, 5 if you count the other owner doing an appraisal.

And I was just pointing out about the amethyst that it is likely to get damaged with daily wear. Amethysts are super-inexpensive, though, so in the event that yours gets scratched or broken, it will be easily replaced.

  • Mandafly84...3 weeks is EXACTLY what our jeweler said it would take! I think I figured it out! About 6 weeks in, our jeweler called my finance requesting he resend the email of above picture (ring). I know for a fact, he (jeweler) originally sent to his guy with a 1 dimensional drawing/explanation. It seems to me, his guy "lost" that email. Makes sense according to the finished product that he made it only seeing that one dimensional drawing. That band looked like silver wire in the shape of figure 8's (like drawing). Its the only reasonable explanation. There is no way he could have designed it from the pic.

@Artbyallie....Now...we wait for the CAD from our jeweler for approval. Maybe he didnt do in the first place because of the pic we sent him and the drawing we approved when we were with him while he was doing it?

I am curious @Mandafly84.. Why do you say the salesman made a mistake by calling us before jeweler saw the ring (I happen to agree for some unclear reason)? :) Oh and thanks...I agree also that jewelry should be worn, especially if it has such sentimental value. Honestly though, the amethyst is probably as small as the diamonds in the band (in above pic). Like I said, its just a nod to our special moment in Feb. (2010).

Overall, I really do have complete confidence that our jeweler will move mountains to get this back in time...and right! He really does take pride (have used him for years).  Geez..not to mention all the $$ we have/are spending on the E ring and wedding bands.

Because, unless I'm reading your OP wrong, the sales guy who called you wasn't involved in working with you and your FI to design it.  He didn't know what the finished ring was supposed to look like.  For example, if I work with clients to design a ring, and the finished product arrives on my day off, or when I'm not there, the staff waits to call the client until I've had a chance to inspect the ring and confirm it's right.  If a piece came back and it was all wrong, I'd rush a correction or replacement before notifying my client and putting them through all the stress you're experiencing.
