AWESOME start to my morning *sarcasm*

On my way to work this morning (a 60 mile commute one way) I got pulled over and got a speeding ticket. I didn't even try to argue because it was a 77 mph in a 60 mph. In my defense, I had just gone around someone who was going under the speed limit and I was going downhill (and I thought the speed limit was 65 mph).

I used to speed really bad but lately I decided not to because 1). I can't afford a ticket 2). It doesn't really end up saving you much time and 3). It burns my gas mileage. So the fact that I got a ticket right after I decided to not speed really upset me. After he gave me my ticket I cried but luckily held it in until after he left.

The sad part is that I am 23 and have had my license since I was 16 and have never even been pulled over. Hopefully that will at least look good when I go to court. I don't even know how to handle this?

Re: AWESOME start to my morning *sarcasm*

  • @shrekspeare I need to look up and see how much the fine is so I can just be prepared to drop that much money.

  • The State Trooper did tell me I have to appear in court since the speed was so high, or have an attorney to do it for me. I told him I worked for a municipality so he made sure the court date was almost two months away. That way I can make sure I'm off.

  • I got my first ticket when I was 19. 73 in a 30. You can imagine that I cried pretty hard after that and was totally freaked out. Didn't help that a month later, I got another one for a 63 in a 55 (which I think was BS). Everything turned out fine though - didn't lose my license (and should've), I got my larger ticket reduced (60 in a 30) but the downside was that I had to pay a shit ton of money for my tickets, plus an assessment fee every year for three years (and the amount depended on the number of points on my license - thanks NYS!) Since this is your first ticket, there is a pretty good chance the judge will reduce it for you, possibly to something that won't even carry points on your license. Just don't automatically plead guilty on the ticket and send it in. Go to the court hearing if you can and talk to the judge in person. Good luck! I know how much speeding tickets suck. Thankfully I haven't gotten another one since.
  • @ckel24 My FI got a speeding ticket when he was 16 going like 85 in a 65 and they ended up reducing it for him so he didn't lose his license.

I'm hoping they will reduce it so I won't have any points on my license.

There's a pretty good chance that they will. You've had a clean driving record for 7 years, it's your first ticket and it's not like you were being reckless. There are a lot of things that they can reduce the ticket down to that won't carry any points. I'll cross my fingers for you!
  • @eg72 - do you live in a state where you can take defensive driving to have the ticket removed from your record.  In TX, you can take it once a year - you only pay for the course and the ticket is removed from your record and won't affect your car insurance.

We also have the option of deferred adjudication here (at least we did a few years ago).  If you chose that option, the ticket would be removed as long as you didn't get another moving violation for 6 months.  My brother got a speeding ticket the week before leaving for Iraq so he chose that option, didn't have to pay anything, and made sure his Humvee didn't speed to much in Iraq (lol).

Thanks! On the ticket it says that the conditions of the road were "good" and visibility was "good" and that traffic was "medium. So hopefully that will show I wasn't being reckless. I've always been that person that never wants to get in trouble, and now I feel like the kid who disappointed their parents. I'm not even telling my parents so they will never even know haha!

  • Depending on your state you might get points on your license. Definitely call the court to check, or check the DMV website for your state.
  • If your county or state gives you the option to go to traffic school, take it- it should help keep your insurance rates down.

And don't feel bad: I didn't get pulled over for the first time until I was 33. Then I got pulled over the second time 3 days later. I got lucky the first time- I burst into tears because I was so surprised/shocked/scared - and the cop actually felt bad for me. I ended up with a warning. The second time I was less lucky. I didn't get an increase on my insurance (I called my broker because we have a good relationship and told him what happened) but FI has been less lucky.

  • @beharrington I live in NC and we have something called "prayer for judgement" which sounds like the same thing you mentioned. But I think it is that you can't get a ticket for the same thing within five years or you get double points or penalty or something like that. And as much as Iam on the road, I don't want to risk it. I think we may have a defensive driving course though. I will definitely look into that.

@kaos16 I'm starting my reseach about the laws and such here in NC. Thanks!

  • @wandajune6 It was all I could do not to cry. It was a State Trooper and they have a reputation for being less forgiving. As I drove away I was crying and I was like, maybe I should have just cried and made him feel sorry for me!

  • When I got a ticket, it was for going 66 in a 45 when I was like 18.  The fine was $160 and everyone gave me all these tips on what to say in court.  Problem was, the trooper didn't file properly and I was never given the chance to try.  I kept calling the number they gave me a it said no record over and over.  I finally got a notice in the mail a couple months later that just said to pay the fine by x date, and I had 2 points.  I just paid it and was done with it.  Now the points are gone because it's been like 7 years.

Oh and I cried.  I didn't get any pity (wasn't trying), I actually cried because the cop pissed me off.  I drive a convertible Mustang that I paid for entirely on my own.  When I bought it at 16, I was too young to sign for it so my parents did, but it was my car and all the payments were made by me and me only.  The cop said "Just another pretty girl driving mommy's pretty car?"  I fucking went off on him.  Literally stood up in my car (the top was down) and reamed his ass out for assuming that.  And when I get super angry, I cry.  I got my point across, and I think my tiny 18 year old ass scared him a little.

I ALWAYS cry after I get pulled over. Not while I'm being pulled over, but afterwards. MA cops are assholes. One of them pulled me over because I'd gotten lost because of construction at night; I was just trying to get home and then became convinced I'd ended up on a road that I wasn't allowed to be on. So I tried turning around and merging back with traffic (and did so without cutting anyone off!), and a cop pulled me over and told me I'd tried to kill him and keep him from going home to his family. I was barely 23 at the time and looked it, and it was really upsetting.

Any idea, in general, how much your insurance goes up with 2 points? This guy was nice but I think it wouldn't have helped either way so I'd rather not cry in front of him.

And I would be pissed too if I were you! I'm just picturing a tiny 18 year old girl going off on a cop and scaring him. Makes me giggle and my morning a little better!

  • @phira He asked me why I was in a hurry. and I was just like, "Well, to be completely honest, I'm running late for work." He asked where I worked and kind of made it seem like I didn't work anywhere too "important." When I told him I worked for the Town, his attitude changed completely. I am 23 (and look it, if not younger) so he probably thinks/thought I'm some post grad student living off mommy and daddy.that's the impression I got anyways.

I was pulled over at the toll area of the bridge that I was speeding on and the lady who was behind the booth nearest to us was yelling at the cop, too, backing me up by going "Mmhmm!" and "Tell him girl!"  It was fantastic.  And FTR, I have nothing against police officers in general and am actually friends with quite a few!

I don't remember how much my insurance went up from the ticket, but I know after the points were gone, my insurance went down about $40 a month.  I was also around 21 years old then, so I don't know if my policy changed because of my age, too.

  •   I got 2 tickets back to back when I was 17, then no more for almost 20 years. My first time driving to FI's place on post was when we had only been dating for a couple of months, and I got pulled over by the MP's on base.  I cried, lol.  I was so freaked out about driving on post anyway, then that happened.  I called him and made him come and get me where I'd gotten pulled over.  He showed up, opened my door, and pulled me out to give me a huge hug.  I started falling for him right then at that exact moment.

I have no idea how many points I got for that, or if it even shows up on my driving record since it was military police and not the regular police.  I just paid it and swore to follow the speed limit on post forevermore.  LOL
