Wedding Dress Crowdsourcing

What's the etiquette on asking somebody (a friend of my sister's) where she got her dress? I loved the photos I saw and would like something similar, or to know where she got it, but I'm not sure if it's rude or invasive to ask somebody I don't know very well, since it's (a) sort of asking how much she spent on it and (b) I don't want her to think I'm hijacking her style or anything!

Re: Wedding Dress Crowdsourcing

  • its not rude it all ask your sister to ask her where she got her dress from you are only asking what the salon was. you dont have to ask for the price once you figure out where the salon is give them a call and find out what the gowns start at
  • I had plenty of people ask me the dress' designer or the salon I bought it from. I don't think it's a big deal.

As long as you don't say, "I want to know because I want to steal your dress," or "exactly how much dough did you drop?" you're probably fine.

  • Agree with PPs.  I think it's totally fine to ask about the salon and/or designer of the dress.  Also, if you have a picture of the dress, the people over on the Attire and Accessories board work all sorts of magic figuring out designers and style numbers.

  • Crowdsourcing made me think you were doing to ask for crowd funding for your dress. I was like *GASP*! LOL I think it is perfectly fine to ask her where she got it and actually kind of flattering. :)

    I thought the same thing.

I think it's fine to ask for a dress shop or designer recommendation.

You can drop a pic into google search, too, to find results. I agree with the PP who suggested posting a pic (cropping out any recognizable details about the bride) to the AA board. Those ladies are geniuses.
  • Thanks, all!
  • "I loved your dress!  Who designed it/what store did you get it from?" and then if she gives you a weird look (which I doubt) you can say "Oh, I am just curious because I liked how the designer used the lace" or whatever.
