PMSing before the big day

So due to fluctuations in recent months, it seems my "monthly miracle" will arrive 4 days before my wedding day, which is next month. Super. I never thought I was the PMS type until I started tracking all that about a year ago and I discovered that yes, yes I DO get emotional and crabby like Pamprin commercials talk about. So on top of the stress leading up to the wedding I'll be about three inches from going over the edge due to stupid hormones. It should be lovely.

Anyone have any super PMS-fighting remedies to share? Should I take baths (I actually hate baths)? Light aromatherapy candles? Call in sick to work for a week to meditate? The last thing my FI (and my WP and family and everyone else!) needs to deal with is a turbo-charged emotional bride!! It would be nice to enjoy the days leading up to the wedding.

Re: PMSing before the big day

  • Do you do yoga?  That could help with PMS symptoms and relaxation. Also, if you're on the pill you could manipulate them so you are not on your period or PMSing right before the wedding.

  • Considering PMS stands for pre-menstrual syndrome, if your period has already started you should be fine.

I should be right on schedule to get mine near the end of our honeymoon, meaning I am probably going to be a cry baby at our wedding...oh well :)
  • Can you use your BC to avoid having your period that week?  I just use mine continuously and get a period whenever I feel like using nature's pregnancy test, maybe 4 times a year.

I have heard that staying really hydrated and making sure you get in a daily workout are both helpful.  Honestly you'll be emotional about the wedding anyway, so I'm sure you'll have some emotional moments and that's OK.

Its the days leading up to it that I'm worried about, not the wedding day itself. I'm picturing myself being a ball of tears a week before the wedding!

@JCBride2014 - I went off BC about a year ago but that absolutely used to be my go-to plan to avoid having my period at inopportune times. We're hoping to start a family right after we get married so I wanted any residual BC hormones out of my system. Gah.
  • I had PMS the week before my wedding, and my period on my wedding day. I spent a lot of time doing the things that relax me—baths, walks, hanging out outside, laughing with my then-fiancé—and taking it easy. Try to arrange your planning so there's not much you need to take care of that week. It really won't be that bad, I promise.

Sometimes, just knowing you have PMS makes the crabbiness more bearable.

Let your fiance know in advance as well. For me, PMS doesn't make me get upset about stuff that normally wouldn't upset me. It just lowers my bullshit threshold so that I get upset more quickly. If people know to avoid stressing out a bride right before her wedding, that might work in your favor.

And like @emmyg65 says, focus on relaxing before the wedding. Get as much organized as possible, and even have deadlines for stuff in advance. For example, if our favors aren't done 2 weeks before the wedding, we're not finishing them. The week before the wedding should be stuff that HAS to be the week before the wedding.

Thank you for this - I feel better already!

I own a dog walking and pet sitting company so my job is literally to play with puppies outside all day...so I'll just make sure I REALLY enjoy it that week :)

Ugh - I am so in the same boat as you!! Off BC to clear my "system" so we can try to conceive right away AND slated to start my period on wedding day. I had pretty light/VERY regular periods and little-to-no PMS when I was on BC, but now that I'm off, things (mood & flow...sorry if that's TMI) have become far less predictable. I like the advice given so far. I'd add that if you are a believer in essential oils, then try Dragon Time and Clary Sage.

Sucks, doesn't it?! As far as I know my period will come 4 days before the wedding, but with everything being so out of whack recently...who knows. It could be 4 days before or 2 days after. So frustrating!

@phira The bolded fits me to a tee!

OP, I am worried that I will have my period on my wedding day. As long as I don't start the day before or the day of, I will be fine. My cramps are awful and I can't imagine them on the day of.

Agree. I always feel kind of stabby when I'm PMSing. Just have to take a deep breath and remember that in a couple days it will go away.

Let your FI and your BMs know you might be a little crabby. Stock up on midol, wine and chocolate. Also, I've heard that taking calcium regularly can reduce the symptoms of PMS, but I've never tried it.

Water is your friend. Drink plenty of it and stay away from massive amounts of caffeine.

I've heard exercise is a good cure, too, and it works for me. It doesn't need to be a marathon; some brisk walking should do it.

  • I tend to drink a lot of chamomile tea to help me relax when I'm PMS-ing.
