Mandalay Bay in-suite receptions- Long Post but, need advise!!

Hello All,

I can't being to tell you all how I am freaking out! I have been going back and forth w/ MB for days w/ countless emails,  calls, I went for a scouting and tasting 10/30/13! I was very turned off by this place. Why? Let me count the ways:

1)    I was drawn in to MB because the Valley of the Falls. I called to discuss and was told unless I put down a non-refundable deposit of 500.00 dollars the can not guarantee me my date. Explaining to them that I was coming out the following week to scout, they said they can only hold it for 24 hours. Feeling forced I forked over my money (idiot, I know)

2)    I'm coming out from NJ to view your facilities for a wedding , I expect to be treat with VIP treatment. Tickets to a show, a free meal, something! They do nothing to make you feel welcome/special at all! Not to mention the hotel facilities fees they charge you daily ($25.00). For what I have no idea. I guess for maid service/use of the pool (if it’s open)and wifi. No Fridge but, if you want one you can have one for a additional 25.00.

3)    There are many different people you need to meet with. Wedding Coordinator for Ceremony, Restaurant Manager for a recp @ one of the various restaurants, Catering Manager for Banquet Rooms and tasting, Hotel Manger to visit Suites. Which leaves you limited time to scout anywhere else unless you are out visiting for a week or more.

4)    The tasting is 50 dollars per person or more if you want alcohol tasting. Which not only are you tasting but, so is the wedding coordinator and the banquet manager. Which umm, why are you tasting? You work there don’t you know what the food taste like and why am I paying for your meal?  To top it off you are not allowed to take the leftovers back to your room! Which is ridiculous! I paid for it, let me take it with me!! Some crap that the banquet food can be taken to the hotel rooms because it’s not the same cater. Whatever. Both the coordinator’s were very unenthusiastic about anything. Trying to make conversation with them was like pulling teeth. Did the answer my questions yes. Was it like talking to a robot yes.

5)    The Restaurant Manger for the location we are interested in (Mix Lounge) was lovely! She was very friendly chatty in-person via email she takes forever to respond and call you back. That being said. I walked into the Mix Lounge and new that was my spot! Then I was told that no minors may attend. Burst my bubble, ugh.

6)    Hotel Management for Tours of Hospitality Suite, Vista Suite and Media Suite. – I had to go several times during my stay to see these suites. Which my #1 requirement, which I told them was, it must be a ALL Strip View. None of these suites have this. The Vista is the closest to that. Disappointed again.

7)    While staying there we switched rooms do to the fact that our room reeked like marijuana!!! After switching  to another room it was ok the 1st night and then the next night same thing!  This is supposed to be a 5 Star Hotel???

8)    I asked numerous times while there to the coordinators/via emails (because I just knew it) that there had to be Penthouse suites. Finally after all the attempts, I found out there are indeed penthouses!! The are the ( M-Suite, H–Suite, O-Suite, T-Suite, E-Suite, L-Suite) the T suite is what I am looking for Exactly!! Why couldn’t someone tell me this while I was out there so, I could take a tour of this? Grrr. Now knowing about the “T Suite” the next hurdle is you can only book 9 months in advance and this, this one’s the best for ALL gaming hotels you are absolutely not guaranteed that room! There is a 1% chance you could be bumped!! Reason: If a high roller comes in and they want that room you are in, you get knocked out! I get it their millions is more then my 50,000. They try everything in there power to not let this happen but can not  guarantee at all.  Why would you take the risk?? If someone knocked me out of my room, let them come face me in my gown and tell me they want my room!!

In conclusion :
I am looking for other locations but, finding the same road blocks at MGM, Aria, Cosmo, and Belliago. The Only locations I found that can accommodate nicely and have the views of the strip I’m looking for are The Platinum Hotel and Mandarin Oriental. Both of the Coordinators at these locations are AWESOME!! Both of these hotels are non-gaming so, you can book everything and be guaranteed it is yours, no changes. Unfortunately Platinum does not have my date and Mandarin is sooo beautiful but, is not within my budget.

If you are still reading my very long post – please feel free to rant back 

  • Planet Hollywood has a couple of really awesome suites with great views of the strip. You can't book through the website, but it sounds like you'd want to call and deal with coordinators anyway. They'll be able to let you know dates/prices. They have some really good wedding packages too. They were our first choice before we slashed our budget.
  • And FWIW, I had my reception in the Vista Suite at MB and had absolutely zero issues. We had a great view and an awesome party. I'm sorry you ran into road blocks.

As far as the marijuana smell, they can only do so much if it's fresh, as in just started that night. If it wasn't there but you start smelling it from another room, just call the front desk and ask them to find the offenders. I agree that your room should be freshened before you take occupancy, but they can only prevent the smell coming from another room if you take action. They can't constantly monitor the large number of rooms on their property 24/7, which is how people get away with receptions in the Vista Suite. ;)

I live in Vegas and ran in to many of the issues you are facing with hotels on the strip... we are having our ceremony and reception at the Silverton which is just south of the strip right off I-15. If you are looking for strictly on-strip because of the views... I wish you luck! But Silverton is a great fit for us because we can do EVERYTHING on site (ceremony, reception, and lodging) and it isn't unreasonably expensive. They also let you use vendors of your choice (besides food) - which most strip hotels you are limited to THEIR photographers and florists.

A venue you may want to look in to that is still on the strip is Bali Hai golf club... its right next to Mandalay Bay/Four Seasons. This was our second choice!

Edited to add ... Mix is where we got engaged and SO wanted to do our reception or rehearsal dinner there, but also were turned off by the adult only policy. :(

We used Masterpiece Cuisine, and they were amazing. They're familiar with MB and how to get into the suites. We didn't have any issues at all. We fed 43 people for around $1000 plus tip.

I don't have my pro pics yet. We just got married a couple weeks ago. :)
  • Have you been here yet?

You can sort by "Vista Suite" or "Mandalay Bay" to check out pictures from other brides who've had their reception in the Vista Suite. You can also check out some of the other hotels and suites.
