NWR: I just came from this event(vent)

So I attended an event that was held by old school tonight. They had an open bar, a wonderful selection of foods including the assortments of desserts. So me and sorority sister get to a bar and we each order a glass of red wine. A couple hours hours later, I go back to the bar and order a fourth drink. The bar tender told me only three drinks allowed for the entire evening at the event. He said it was also to prevent us from getting "drunk" and doing something against my school's set of "rules". I was completely mortified because it was announced and advertise as an open bar. It was so rude and other people there were taken back because they thought it was rude and pathetic to be monitored on how much an individual would be allowed to drink.

  • Wow. That seems like really, really, really poor and dumb planning on the part of the even coordinator.

  • I have no earthly idea but some of the student organizers were telling me it's what they do. When they have events for the board of trustees or reunion weekend, the drinks are unlimited.

  • Was it a large event? It seems like it would be difficult to keep track of how many each person had had.
  • No, it was a very small event no more than 30 people. The event was for new faculty members.

  • The entire time I am thinking "imagine this at wedding" and how would be people take it? It's so rude to limit people based on that stupid excuse of people getting drunk.  It didn't make any sense when I am having wine with my meal course and mingling with new coworkers.

  • Dude the lightweight I am and especially with tequila, it can take me as little as two drinks to get drunk depending on what's in them and how strong they are. Point being, quantity of drinks doesn't determine whether you're drunk or not!

I went to a wedding with a 3 drink limit. I side-eyed it and was bothered by it, especially when servers took my almost full glass of wine away from the table. Bring that back, bitch, I only get 3 don't waste!
AT least they filled your glass. They filled it under the halfway mark! Stingy bar tenders....

Plenty of people would already be drunk on three drinks. Plenty of people would not.

Not only are they treating you like children who can't successfully monitor their intake or be trusted not to drive drunk, they've apparently never been given one of those weight/BAC charts in a health class or with their driver's license renewal.

DON'T GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS!! Next, they'll have the bartenders size you up, decide it'll take Amy four drinks to get drunk and Brian two, and limit you that way.

Are you a student currently and was the event only for students?  I know that when I was in school they actually had a policy which included a drink limit for student events that had alcohol at them. I didn't agree with it - but unfortunately, it was the rule at the school.  Then when I worked in the alumni relations department - I learned that it was JUST for school events - they wanted to make sure the alumni (potential donors) were happy so they would donate to the school.

Either way - they should not have advertised it as an open bar.

  • Personally, I would be drunk after 3 glasses of wine. That wouldn't stop me (sometimes) from getting number four!

But yeah, that is ridiculous. How did they keep track of every person's drinks?

No, I am on the Board of Trustees. I am an alumni that is now a new faculty member. I said this earlier. As you said, you would expect them to make to make the alumni and BOT members very happy. Apparently they didn't get the memo.

That's weird, and it's unfortunate & embarrassing to be lectured at the bar in front of everyone. It's a glass of wine, not a shot of Patron, for crying out loud.

If they were going to limit drinks (LAME), they should have at least told everyone in advance; i.e., each person gets three drink tickets.

  • For work-related or other types of corporate-esque events I can totally understand having a limit on drinks for whatever odd reason.  Plus, if I was paying $x amount and knew full well it included 3 drink tickets, fine!  The issue here is that you were deceived.

  • I would personally be pretty drunk after 3 drinks but, that's because I drink 1-2 times a month and that means 2 glasses of wine or so. However, my sister can drink a 6 pack like no one's business and not even seemed phased. How embarrassing to do that to people!

I just imagined going to order a drink and being asked to step on a scale.
