Is it too early for white pants?

I have a baby shower to attend on Sunday. It will be 70 degrees. I want to wear these cute white pants I have. Too early in the season?

Re: Is it too early for white pants?

  • If you adhere to the old school rule (I believe after Easter and before Labor Day) it is too early.

But this close to Easter I would go for it if the weather is appropriate!

  • I may or may not have a super cute pair of white jeans and I may or may not have been wearing them for the past couple weeks. But when its 80 degrees outside, its hard to not dress summery and cute.

  • I think that rule is pretty outdated. The past 2 winters (at least) every store nearby  (NY Metro area) was selling white pants and other white garments. You do you, wear 'em!
  • Thanks ladies!
  • I also have these white pants with like a black squiggle pattern on them. I won't lie, I wore them last week. It was sunny and I love the fit :)

Most people say it's acceptable and that the wearing-white-post-labor-day rule is outdated: [link]

  • Rock 'em! I agree with PP...it's an outdated "rule".

  • Do it! I'm wearing white/gray/beige floral pants right now. That "rule" is way outdated. That's why there's such a thing as "winter white!"

  • I always thought these kinds of rules are incredibly silly unless you live in an area with extremely predictable weather (and I don't really know what that place would be...). If the weather is summer-like, I'm going to wear summer-like clothes and vice versa.

  • Hahahaha every day is too early for white pants in my world. I could never keep those clean for more than about 5 minutes!
  • BTW, I was under the impression that was an old laundry rule. You didn't wear white in winter because the sun wasn't strong enough to have a bleaching effect.

I never the leave the house without my Tide pen.

Also, the first time I wore these white pants last year, my girlfriend spilled red wine ALL over them. Thank god I was home and able to wash them right away. They are still perfectly white.
  • I personally wouldn't wear white before Easter, but hey, it's arbitrary.
  • If I lived in Florida where it is currently 80+ degrees I would be wearing white already.  But here in MD, it is just getting to be 70 degrees but still has a slight nip in the air due to the ground still being on the colder side, so I wouldn't be wearing white until mid-late May.  But if we had had some crazy weather and it had been 80 degrees for a few weeks, I would rock them.

I agree with the PPs that said it's an outdated fashion rule. Wear 'em.

The rule is after Memorial Day until Labor Day.  It does not apply in tropical climates like Florida.  I don't wear white pants or shoes until then, but you know I'm traditional. Cream or "winter white" is OK, and the rule does not apply to children.   On a recent cruise to Hawaii, I only saw one woman wearing white.  Don't do it in Europe.  I saw nothing but black in Italy, and it was very warm!

  • I was raised with the 'after Easter until Labor Day' rule and I just can't break it. Feels like I'm doing something dirty if I do.  Does not apply to kids, athletic shoes, wedding dresses, and 'winter white' clothing items, or when in the tropics, however.  I don't really side eye it if someone else breaks the rule, though. Only if they're wearing something completely inappropriate to the weather and/or occasion - like white linen capris when it's 40 degrees out, regardless of the calendar date. I'm not even sure I could break it if I was on a beach in Jamaica in January. It's just ingrained.
