Cake Alternative - Cookie Bar

My FI and I are not really cake people. We've been thinking about doing a cookie bar with several different types of cookies. Has anyone else ever done this as their main dessert?

I didn't do it as a main dessert, but I did have a cookie table as an "extra".  If you do it as a main dessert, you should probably plan for a minimum of 4-6 cookies per person.  More if you will be having lots of different flavors.

  • I'm also doing a cookie bar, but as a side/favor, not my main dessert.

Go for both quantity and quality here. a decadent option would be nice and make it feel more "substantial" (My fave, chocolate chip coookies stuffed with an oreo. A. Mazing.)

  • I agree with @kimches. Add in a few more items if you can. We added brownies, lemon bars, almond bars and some other kind of bar that I can't remember.
  • Your main dessert can really be anything you want.  Tradition states that a cake should be the main dessert but I think it can be anything and there are so many fun ideas to play with.  If you have a cookie bar, just budget for like 4 cookies a person so that you will have extras and cover you bases if people want to try all of them.

  • A friend of mine had a cookie "cake" with milk shooters instead of a wedding cake.  Basically she had chocolate chip cookies displayed on tiers and then had the milk shooters on the side.  But she also had a variety of other desserts to choose from as well.

  • Mmmm, I'd much prefer cookies over cake!  Ditto PPs, make sure you have enough and consider adding a little variety.  Sounds yummy!
  • Nothing at all wrong with cookies and no cake, but people may be surprised to find that there's no cake, because cake-cutting is a signal that the "planned" events are over for the reception.

That said, make sure you have lots of cookies (enough that everyone can get several) and I would have a variety.  As PPs have noted, you can also include finger pastries like brownies, mini-cheesecakes, lemon or lime bars, rainbow bars, and so on.
  • My FI and I were considering doing a small cake that we display and cut, and then having a dessert bar instead of traditional cake. Our wedding will be on the smaller side < 100, and we'll have a few little ones running around. We were trying to accomodate them as well as the adults in that with all the fillings and tasty frostings we choose in our cakes, little kids (and adults) may not like it and you've wasted those slices of your very expensive cake. We were thinking of having a sundae station (yes we know, messy but so fun) and some other small "finger food" type desserts like brownies and cookies, small pastries and such.
  •     I'm not sure, but I think people have said here that if  you do a cake cutting you have to have enough cake for everyone? I think if you forgo the cake you have to feed each other whatever else you are having. I think feeding each other cookies or pie would be just as good.

Then again, I have never met a sweet I didn't like...
