First Dress Fitting and Alteration

I had my first dress fitting / alterations on Saturday. I was nervous because I wasn't sure if it was going to fit. I had gained some weight about 6 months ago due to stress eating (I know it's not healthy but at the time I didn't care). I called DB and they let me come in and try the dress they had (mine was at my mom's house) and the consultant told me I needed to lose weight because the back didn't close properly (corset type back).

Anyway, at the fitting I told the alterations lady about what happened 6 months ago. The alterations lady said I lost ALMOST too much weight and asked how much. I said maybe 5 pounds but no more. She then said that the consultant must not have cared / didn't tie / lace the dress properly because even if I hadn't lost weight the dress still would have fit perfectly fine. Whew!!

I posted a couple pictures. The dress needs to be pressed so it's not the greatest picture but it works

Re: First Dress Fitting and Alteration

  • YOu look so pretty glad the dress is working out.  I love the blue shoes!

I had my first fitting on Friday night and it needs to be taken in quite a bit especially in the bodice.  I haven't lost any weight, the smallest size they could order was still too big.  It was so much fun being in the dress with my shoes and veil and all.

Thanks! It was very exciting. My mom teared up a little bit. Sounds like yours went very well
  • Oh I'm so jealous! I'm glad your dress fits pretty perfectly :)

I however am having my 3rd alterations appt coming up in 2 weeks and I'm outrageously nervous because they can't get my dress tight enough with the corset.. Like.. When we laced it up last time, it was all pulled together like one straight seam, no lacing showing. I told them I got the corset for a reason, please make it the traditional 4 to 2 inches V shape.. And they said it would make the area in my hips smaller (which cannot get any smaller!!) If they took in more material up top.

I'm so nervous. I bought this dress humongous to fit my hips, and I'm so tiny up top that now my dress isn't going to look like how my FI and I envisioned it I fear.

    Oh no!! :(

I am so sorry to hear that. I hope they get it right this time. Have you considered a corset bra under the dress and undergarments? My sister had a similar problem and that's what she did.
  • Beautiful dress!

You look amazing! BOO on the other consultant for hurting your self-esteem!

ETA: Consultants are typically better at getting dresses on than friends/family are, in my experience. My dress fit in the store very easily, but my mom had trouble zipping it up later the same day. The first consultant definitely messed up.

I haven't heard if that before. I don't think it would help my dress to actually have the corset show. The dress is too big up top to allow the corset lacing to show properly.

This is what my dress looks like the last fitting. Corset is too laced up in a straight line, not the pretty V that it is supposed to be. I don't understand why they are having trouble taking it in more...

  • @Sugargirl1019

I don't know why either. It looks like there's extra fabric above your hands. If you want I can circle what I see
  • I know what you mean. I am not a seamstress, but this looks incredibly easy to fix. Just take in the side seams more!! But maybe there's something about being so tiny up top and having huge hips that makes the dress unable to be altered more.

I'm so worried I paid a shit ton of money for a dress that has been ruined. I mean, I cannot walk around with clips on the back of my corset dress after 3 almost 4 alteration appts :/

I know what you mean. I would take it to another place that does alterations and see what they say
  • I have the same problem with my corset back! Getting a tight fit through my waist was the whole reason I chose a dress with this feature! The sides are touching together all the way up instead of the V shape. Have you had any luck?

  • @saraboo101 my appt is this Saturday. Pray for my dress and me!! Let me know how yours goes!
