How much cake to get?

We currently have a cake ordered for 80 people. Including our photographers & servers we have 83 people....should we bump the cake up to 100 servings? We having a buffet dinner w/ caters cooking for 3 hours & a full bar if that helps any. We asked the baker and were told it we could end up with a lot of people that don't each any cake or several that come back for seconds so that was no help.

It's best to be prepared for every single person in attendance to want a piece of cake. Worst case scenario is you have some leftovers to take home (or to give to someone else to take home). The dinner servings and alcohol available is irrelevant.
  • Also consider the serving size.  Most bakers plan on a serving being a very tiny piece, just enough for a couple bites. If you want more generous slices or enough available for seconds (or leftovers for yourself/family), get a bigger cake.  Ask your baker to show or tell you the size they consider 'one serving'.
  • I think this is fine. The servers do not need cake.
  • Servers don't need cake. You most likely will get some cancels.. I think you could leave it where you have it.

Personally, I made it so that there were big servings of cake and leftovers because I love cake.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.
  • We did cupcakes and ordered 96 cupcakes for 84 people. I think there were 3-4 left over? Several people tried 2 different flavors.
  • Another option that your baker can probably do is a sheet cake (1/4, 1/2, etc) of your cake flavor that's cut up in back. It's relatively inexpensive, especially compared to adding layers to an actual wedding cake.

My fiance's sister had almost an entire extra sheet of cake (stemming from wanting three flavors, as well as over-ordering) and let's just say that cake was gone within a week.

Unless you literally order an extra sheet of cake for each guest, having extra cake is one of the best problems to have and it will disappear, trust me.

Servers do not get cake or a meal provided by you.  The venue handles their breaks, if they even work long enough to get one.  In fact there is probably a policy stating they aren't allowed to eat any of your food.

Paging @AddieCake who is the expert. Be warned, she may suggest you buy all the cakes.

I agree. I really don't think having too much cake is ever a problem. I would happily take all the leftover cake home and eat it for breakfast every day.
  • We had cupcakes and a small cake for cutting. We had one piece out of that, and I may or may not have eaten the entire rest of it by myself over the next week.

  • If I attend a wedding, and there is extra cake, I would help alleviate that problem.

  • I'm pretty excited that @AddieCake has a new screen name...my first though upon seeing this posts' title was:

Is AddieCake a guest? Because you'd need all the cakes.

However...servers and vendors do not need cake. In fact, I'm pretty sure they'd rather have a cash tip at the end of the night.

  • Our venue provides a dessert as a part of our meal package.  We are still getting enough cake for everyone to have a slice.  Who doesn't love the option of multiple desserts?  Our guests can have both, one, or none, as they chose.  And they can always take the cake home (our baker provides boxes for guests) if they don't want it that night.

OP does bring up a question for me though, I was planning on getting meals for the vendors that will be there throughout the night (working 8 hours with no food sucks), but is it considered rude not to get enough cake for them to have a slice too?

  • I know, Katy. Whenever people ask this question, I think they have lost their minds wondering if they need cake for everyone!

  • 83 people invited, or 83 responded that they are coming? If you haven't gotten RSVPs yet, you might be okay.

At my FI's brother's wedding, neither FI nor I got any cake, because we had to go set up the honeymoon suite and when we got back, all the cake was gone. That sucked. Make sure there is truly enough for everyone!

  • I ordered 70 servings of cake for 35 people so I'm always in the "you can't have too much cake" camp, but photographers and servers shouldn't be included in your number of people. They don't need cake and I think the only way they would even think of taking any is if everyone is done eating cake and there is a bunch left over.

  • We were planning for 150, but now it's looking like 120. I'm still keeping the cake at 150. You can never have too much cake!!

Agreed that servers and other staff do not need to be included in your cake count. Basically- are they having a meal with you? If yes, count them for cake, if no, don't.

Otherwise, better to have too much cake than not enough!

We had cupcakes and a small cutting cake. Ordered 100 cupcakes, 71 guests came (including vendors). Lots of left over cupcakes. A couple guests took some. Me, DH and my family demolished the rest. Our wedding was OOT for us, but if I could've brought our cake back with us, I would have! I had a piece each day after, but we returned home soon after so I had to leave half of it behind :(. I'm still sad about that... ;)

I hate anything almond so that would include that torte.

  • I would never call leftover cake a "problem" either.

My photographers and coordinator all had a cupcake. I was a bit surprised, but they were so damn delicious I didn't blame them for wanting one. You shouldn't have to worry about servers though. We had 100 cupcakes for 96 guests plus 200 mini cupcakes. We had one regular sized cupcake leftover, and about a dozen minis. We finished those puppies off at 5am when we got up at dawn because we couldn't sleep.

  • Cake is my obsession in the food world.  You can have my dinner but the cake is mine.

Leftover cake?  Is that like leftover wine or leftover chocolate?  I have no experience with the latter 2.

She's counting the photographer and waitstaff in that number.
