Are either of these bridesmaids dresses a good fit for my wedding dress?

I have found two bridesmaids dresses that I love and my bridesmaids really like too! All of them love the first one most, yay agreement!! Although now that it's time to buy them I'm having second thoughts, do they actually complement my dress or do they clash?

Arg, I want us to look great standing next to each other not like some of us (being me) turned up to the wrong party... Opinions please!

p.s. I'm buying them in the light pink - last pic

  • I think they compliment  your dress. The cross draping ties it all together.

The only way they clash is if your choose to dress your BMs is something truly hideous IMHO :) GL!

  • Personally, I think they all look fabulous. I think they compliment your dress too.

  • I think the soft colors and the draping complement each other wonderfully. Probably wouldn't look as good in electric violet, but I love that blush color.

  • Gorgeous dress, aaaaah!

  • I prefer the longer dress over the shorter.  The short dress just seems to casual next to your dress. But a long dress always comes off a bit more formal, IMO.
Whoops gorgot to comment on your question. . . yeah definitely go with longer dresses. They will match the formality of your dress better.

    Totally agree.
  • The long pink one will look great.  I would definitely not go short or bright with that bridal gown, which is stunning btw.

That was the big seller for me, the draping to 'match', so glad you pointed that out. Basically if someone else can see it then it's not just in my head :)

I also totally agree! But the girls prefer the shorter dress, I think they have plans to wear it again, which I'm really happy about! Although I still haven't decided and they're all amazing and will support my decision in the end. I think they're concerned about the 'support' themselves, for small girls they've all got very large chests and are not too sure about strapless... Lucky for some ;)

Thanks grumbledore! When I saw the dress I instantly fell in love and had to have it. I think when you see 'The Dress' you know it's the one! Very similar to the the first time I met my fiancée, love at first sight!  ;)<3 Now if only the rest of the wedding decisions were that easy!!!
  • I agree with maggie that I think the longer one would go better with the formality of your dress. Love your dress by the way.

I agree that the longer dresses would match the formality of your dress better, but if your BM's want the shorter dress because they think they will wear it again (I am a big supporter of BM's finding a dress they could wear again), then I say let them wear what they want, and who cares- it won't impact you getting married in any way.

I would choose the lighter colour though over a bolder one.

    What is your venue like?

P.S. Is the longer dress from David's? If so, I would make sure they try it on before buying it (if they do want to go that direction). My friend tried on that dress in the short version (strapless) at Davids and she is well-endowed- it did not look right. Because the wrapping goes from the bust to the waist line, it gave her no waist and made her look top heavy. Just something to think about.

My thoughts exactly.  Your dress is so formal and fabulous.  I think long dresses will do better to match the formality and look much better next to your dress.
  • I definitely prefer the longer dress, as yours is quite formal. The short ones are pretty but seem just a bit too "casual/flirty" next to your gown.

If they have issues with the top, it is super easy to add spaghetti straps for support.

Also, if they want to wear it after the wedding, hemming it would also be super easy.

The second one matches the formality of your dress more than the first, which seems a tad casual.

  • I'm with everyone else on this one, I like the longer dresses. And the girls can always shorten them if they want to wear them again.

My venue is outdoor - yes breaking with tradition going for a cathedral train at an outdoor wedding! The venue is a heritage site in New Zealand with early colonial Victorian architecture dating from 1850. It also has a small steam train (not mini just small) which we've hired for guests to drink champagne and have a quick ride just after the ceremony and before cocktail hour. The theme, including my dress, is a nod to Victoria vintage.

The bridesmaids dresses are from www.boden.co.uk and it looks like I've just bought the last one in a size 10, lucky!! They have a great returns policy so if the fit is off on my sister then I'll return it and it will be back to the drawing board. Here's hoping it's as beautiful as I think it will be!! The rest of the bridesmaids are in NZ or Australia - makes things a bit tough!

I must say it is super challenging arranging a wedding from the other side of the world! I'm in London but getting married in New Zealand. This forum has helped in so many ways already! Reading past posts and comments, the community here is really great!!

wrigleyville, really great idea! I'm going with a matte silver as the colour and I think the dress would look really nice with silver satin ribbon straps! Thank you.
  • I agree with PPs: the longer dresses seem more appropriate with your formal dress.
  • I like the second one better. They can have it shortened to wear again after the wedding.

  • I agree that the color and length of the last dress best match your gown (though I looooove the short one!).

Your gown is beautiful, by the way!

I have shorter girls with chests too! They really wanted short even though my dress is pretty formal. I ended up letting them go with the short dress b/c they were so happy about it. While I agree that the long dress is more formal, your girls will look prettier if they are happier, and not fiddling with the top of their dress. If you get it in the soft pink, it will look very romantic.
