Too early to plan?

Hi everyone :)
I am 2/3 of the way done my Masters degree (THANK GOD! haha).  I have an assistantship as a residence hall director, so my breaks are few and far between.  I am getting married July, 2011, after my fiance and I have finished our degrees.  However, since I am on break now, I want to get the bulk of the decisions made this summer.  Is a year in advance too early to design invitations, book our florist, and choose a cake?  I know typically they don't need to be this far in advance, but my next break won't be until December and that will only be for two and a half weeks, which doesn't give me much time.  What do you all think???

Re: Too early to plan?

  • I don't think it is too early- lots of popular ceremony and reception venues start booking 1+ year out!

  • I don't think it's too early for any of those things.  I wouldn't get invites printed just yet, but it's fine to work on designs.  And I had a venue, caterer, and florist over a year out!  I gave myself extra time since it's hard to juggle grad school a job, and wedding planning.

P.S. I went to collge in central PA, and I can't help but wonder if you're at the same school, but I don't want to seem creepy!  I was even an R.A. at my school, so you might know my old boss :)

  • Not at all! If it is then I guess i'm too early as well and being a student bride makes it all that much more difficult for planning because you're in school (and maybe even a job!) as well!

I'm planning on doing most of my planning during my spring break :-)
  • It's not too early! My fiance and I are getting married on 09/10/11 in Staten Island New York. At the time of the wedding I'll be halfway through my Master's program. This summer is essentially the last time before the wedding that I will actually have a lot of time so I am getting as much as I can get done now. I'm just going to deal with giant rubbermaids in my guest bedroom to hold everything I buy/diy.

  • I'm a grad student as well, but getting married in 2012, and I don't think that it's too early to plan! I think it's a smart idea to do things while you're on break, so you're not rushing to do them later.

  • It's a perfect time!   I made my big decisions last summer before I started med school, back when I had time to drive to different venues and such.  I think I had venue, photographer, and caterer last summer when I was on break.  The rest I just took care of when I had time.  Now I'm on break again so I can finish up.

    Good luck and happy planning!
  • Hey I dont think its too early to start planning. I would say start now because things may come up in the future and you may not have time to plan then, so start now!Laughing
  • Now is the PERFECT time to start planning! Start getting some things set in stone right now and begin looking for venues.

I don't think it's ever too early to start thinking about things...but a little over a year is a perfect time to start booking things! Good luck!
  • No - not at all!!

A lot of the stuff can be done along the way.  My fiancee and I are planning primarily on breaks (spring break, winter break, etc) and started probably a year and a half out - just getting things done.

It really helps to start early - especially still being in school and having to juggle those deadlines.  It will help with the stress ^_^

  • i think planning early is a good thing. get everything out of the way when you have the time, so you dont have to worry or stress about it when your back at school. im on the same boat.

  • Not too early at all. My wedding is 17 months out. We are already planning to look at venues this weekend, and hopefully booking the venue by the end of the month.

Good luck! I know how stressful it can be to plan while you are in school, but you will get through it.  My fiance will still be in school when we get married: we have to take a postponed honeymoon to accommodate his school schedule.

  • I'm glad other people on here don't think that it's too early to plan! I asked just some general questions on some of the other boards and all I got back was some kinda snobby answers that I shouldn't even be thinking about my wedding yet! But with school taking up a lot of time (and creating a lot of stress!) I think it's better to start doing some planning ahead, that way there's a lot less stress later on
  • hey Rae I think you are talking about the BM question and honestly they weren't trying to be snobby promise! Its from experience.

I will have a 2yr engagement and basically got blind sided into asking a friend (odd situation+ 2 days after I got engaged= really awkward moment)  and I kind of regret it.  Yes she is a long time friend that I would have considered having as a BM, but the closer I get to the wedding the more I realize I have other friends that mean a lot more to me and the relationship I have with FI that I would have chosen instead.  It is 100% ok to think about who you want, and discuss with FI about sisters/brothers long time friends.  But I would still wait to ask. A BM/GM doesn't have anything they need to do until about 4months out (get a dress) so there is no rush to actually do the asking!

I ended up asking my girls at the 1yr mark because I know that my SIL was a little confused about the situation etc so it was just easier, but even waiting a year was a great decision for me.

As far as booking vendors and such go for it!  We had our church, photog, and reception site about 18months out.  we have gotten little things done since then and being so busy with school it has been nice to have the time.

  • it just kinda came off as snobby from some people, i think they thought that i was going to ask people like right now, but i'm definitely not going to ask anyone yet, i was just kinda brainstorming some people and wondering about, should things be the same (which i'm guessing will be, it's kinda been the same for a while!), who to ask. more or less i started thinking about all the stuff that there is to plan for a wedding and getting my self stressed out about stuff that i don't even need to yet! i'm pretty good at doing that haha.

i'm definitely hoping to get some of my stuff planned out soon, mainly my reception and ceremony site, since the place we are looking at gets booked pretty far in advance, and my dad doesn't want me to do ANY planning while school is in session (he's all worried about my grades), so I don't have quite as much time as it seems to plan
  • I know what you mean Rae. That question gets asked so often, almost as much as "How do I fire a BM?"  that many of the girls try to stop the problem before it starts- if that makes sense?

Trust me I have been around a while and I have gotten to "know" a lot of the girls around here, and for the most part I don't think they are trying to be snotty.  SOOO often I read their posts and think "ugh you could have worded it sooo much better!" because it does come off as short and snotty. and it turns off a lot of the new posters instead of becoming a place to turn for help.

That is one reason I like this board and the club/local boards.  They tend to be honest yet nicer.

  • Hey Rae,

I TOTALLY know what you mean!!! I posted something about asking my MOH in a special way or with a gift and half of the responses I got back were " You shouldn't even be asking yet..." My MOH is my SIL of nearly 10 years!!!!! I have known her since I was 7 years old and if there is ONE thing that I am 100% sure about: it is having her as my MOH and I have known that for years.

I already asked her because she lives nearby (I see her several times a month) and she is totally helping me plan everything. I asked early b/c I knew that decision wouldn't change and I didn't want her to think that I was only asking cause she had help so much with the planning. I wanted her to know that I chose her b/c she is like my sister and she means that much to me. BUT that being said: I am not naming any other bridesmaids until closer to the wedding.

    Good luck!
