NWR: When are address labels appropriate?

I have a bunch of personalized return address labels, and I'm trying to figure out when it's appropriate for me to use them. For example, can I use them for invitations to the bridal shower I'm throwing, or do I need to write those out by hand? Should I restrict their use to business correspondence, like paying bills? Something in between?

Re: NWR: When are address labels appropriate?

  • I'm with Pretty Girl Lost...it doesn't really matter.  Some people don't like them on the fancy and formal wedding invitiations, which I understand, but to me it's whatever!

Also I hope this is a shower you are hosting for someone else...

  • Are they return labels? I prefer when invitations are addressed to be my hand (though it's not a big deal if they're not) but if you want to use return labels on the invitation or the response card, go for it, I won't bat an eye over it.

  • For a return label there aren't any rules that I'm aware of.  I probably wouldn't use them on a formal wedding invitation, but I did use them for all of our thank you notes.

  • Return address labels never bother me. It only bothers me if there is no return address, so I have no idea where to send a response!

  • Return address labels never bother me.  It's when the recipient's address is printed on a label, or just plain printed that makes me think of 1) mass-mailing/junk mail or 2) business mail.

As long as it is a clear label, I wouldn't mind for the address labels, and I never mind for the RETURN address labels.

I had  labels made and used them for the invites/rsvps. My handwriting is awful. I got labels that matched my invites. I figured most people rip into the envelope and throw it away, so it wasnt something I was willing to stress over.

We had special matching return address labels made for our save the dates and invitations.  I have no issue whatsoever with return labels.  Ours are these:  click - they match the save the date card we chose.

I do not care for the use of labels for guest addresses though.  While it's a victimless crime, to me it looks less personal and I could never do it.

The pretty return labels made our save the date envelopes look really nice and I still hand-wrote the guest addresses.

I asked this on another thread but I can't remember which one now... so I'm asking again -- what does the bolded mean?  Like, literally clear, as in shiny see-through plastic?

How is that better than white (assuming the envelopes are white)?  Is it a matching thing, like white might not exactly match the color of the envelopes?

This has me totally confused and I see it a lot.

  • I used address labels for the RSVP envelopes. I hand wrote the addresses on the invitations.

The clear labels are matte, not shiny, so they don't stand out. And clear is recommended for exactly the reason you suggested--clear matches everything!

  • I just strongly dislike clear labels, I think they are ugly as hell.  But then again, I wouldn't ever use labels period, except for return addresses.

I wouldn't be mad or anything if I received an invitation with a label, but I wouldn't ever do it myself.

  • The shower is for my cousin. I've made a few etiquette mistakes (through ignorance, not a pretty princess mentality), but throwing my own shower has never and will never be one.

I'm pretty sure we had the return address printed directly on the envelopes for the wedding invitation , but my MOH and I hand-lettered the recipients' addresses. In any case, I'm glad I can use them now!
  • Okay, I have a dumb question. We have a rubber stamp made for our return address (because our handwriting is horrible). Is it a complete etiquette faux-pas if we use the stamp on the RSVP envelopes?

  • I used labels for all the bridal shower invites for my friend's shower. I had them on hand and it would have taken me 1000 years to write all the addresses for her family, her FI's family, and her friends and I'm still in school so I'm busy and honestly, I did not care. The invites are adorable, I designed them myself, and I used Harry Potter stamps.

IMO, this is fine.  I will be having our RSVPs printed with our return envelope, because like hell am I sitting and writing my own address 50 times.

  • I designed and printed everyone's addresses on the invitations and our return address for the back. Made life so much easier. No one should be subjected to my chicken scratch handwriting haha.

+1 I had our addresses printed on our return envelope. I don't see this being an issue. Heck...I'm even debating having mailing addresses printed on our envelopes too if my calligraphy idea doesn't work out. My normal handwriting is pretty atrocious and I do want USPS to actually be able to read and deliver our invitations.

  • I think return address labels are fine. I really could care less about a label on an invite, save the date, or any other piece of mail. I have more important things to get my panties in a bunch about.
  • Address labels are FINE for invitations. Anyone who says otherwise has too much time on their hands and legible writing.

  • We printed the "to" addresses on our invitations and used return address labels for our addresses.  I use them for all sorts of correspondence and have no problem with them being used on anything.

But then again, I have terrible handwriting...

  • I do think printing directly on the envelopes would be better than labels.  But I'm a label-hater, so I guess I have too much time on my hands.

Labels are fine, particularly if they are return labels.

We printed direction on our invitations. They looked very nice, I thought.

I write nicely, but I write BIG, so I would likely run out of room on a line and have to carry the line over, making it look sloppy. DH writes clearly, but not prettily.
