Long time Lurker

Hello!!! I added my little bio to the new board , along with reading ALL the vendor posts and getting a feel for everything that is going on !!! We are VERY newly engaged, however, my fiance (still weird saying that) wants to get married in Fall 2012 ...and I feel like its coming OH SO SOON!!! I suppose I would rather not wait almost 2 years but Im already having anxiety over thinking about all the things that will go into planning ;)

I just wanted to say a quick hello and thank everyone in ADVANCE for their help.  I have noticed everyone here is so kind and informative with everything. You girls rock!

  • Hi there!
I just got engaged 3 weeks ago and we have it set to get married this Oct.  Neither one of us wanted a long engagement.  I know things will come up fast, but I am having SOOOOO much fun with it.  We are both very laid back people and are committed to not letting this stress us out (at least not too much) :P We had orignally planned to do a quickie in Vegas, but things have changed and we are having a moderate wedding in the D with our friends and family and I could not be happier.  Congratulations & use the board - there are many great things on this site :)

You sound just like me Hjewell!!! I Had no idea there were so many resources available here its amazing!!!! Im just trying to at least find a venue we both agree on , that is in budget and lock it down. The rest I feel like will be cake....(dont let me eat my words)

    Thanks ladies!
  • HAHA! Yes I could not think about anything until I locked in a date and venue.  There are many great places around the city.  Everyone's budget is different so my one suggestion would be to think outside the box.  I was surprised to see how many places would allow you to have a wedding/receptions.  This weekend I am going dress shopping :)  If you have any specific questions or need to vent feel free to PM me anytime since we are both in the same situation :p

  • Yes I am , trying to find places like a Loft, or a place where I can bring my own catering. Im huge into feeding people and having TONS of desserts. I figure I can keep the cost reasonable if Im able to use my own catering and go nuts! LOL

I will PM you if I need anything! haha thank you
  • I love all the newbies coming out! Post more!

  • Welcome to the board. The Knot vendor list for receptions/banquet halls has tons of locations on it. Some are those "outside the box" locations where you can bring in your own caterer.

FYI: our caterer was Holiday Markets in Royal Oak. They rock! You can go in and give them your price point, they will help you with everything. We went in and told them what foods we wanted and a price point, and it went very smoothly. Traci there is fabulous.

I can also recommend Joe's Produce in Livonia, they also do catering and their prices are great also. We went with Holiday, but Joe's was a close second.

I found regular "catering companies" to be less interested in negotiating, and found that gourmet stores do catering, and are more willing to negotiate because catering is not their only profitable enterprise. They already have fabulous foods on hand for their grocery customers.

If you are also doing alcohol, beer or wine, check into Champane's Wine Cellar on 13 Mile Rd in Warren, between Van Dyke & Mound. Huge selection, prices in every price range (except alcohol which has it's one and only price set by the state). Ask to speak to a wine manager and tell them what you want to spend/average by the bottle of wine, they are great. We got 24 various bottles of wine and champagne for $220, and everyone raved about our selection.

Good luck. Looking forward to hearing all about your wedding.
  • I should have already shared that I read all your posts Sue!! I have the holiday market and Joe on bookmark after I read through your vendor review.

I went through all the pages of them and I really would prefer not to do a hall /banquet type setting. We are having such a small party (see other thread I started..I hope Im not doing a faux paus on the board now) and my FI is SO PICKY! He loves exposed brick, white walls, loft loft LOFT. Help LOLOL
  • Welcome!!

I too am a fall bride, we got engaged just before christmas and decided a few weeks ago to do it this fall.  I feel the clock ticking!!

Like hjewell said use the boards....they are so helpful!!

  • Hi and congratulations!  Enjoy the planning and try not to let it stress you out.  We have had a ton of time to plan (18 months when all is said and done) so I cannot imagine having a short engagement.  However, it will go fast!

I'm with you on the Loft idea, but I can't seem to find any in the Detroit area that really fit what I was picturing! You would think that with all of the old buildings, someone would convert one to a loft.

Here are a couple places that I ran across, but nothing quite fit what I was thinking.

This would require a bit too much decorating since the walls are literally all white, but it was the only real loft that I could find. And if I am remember correctly, it was a bit on the pricey side for all of the decorating that would be needed.

This had the exposed brick and the rental fee is VERY reasonable IMO. Here's a link so some really nice photos of a wedding: http://www.jlbwedding.com/archives/3715

This is a restaurant, and I really didn't look into it much at all so I'm not sure how many people it could hold. It is also kind of hard to see from the pictures, but the ceilings look super tall.

    Best of luck with everything!
