Placate me (tell me I'm not a b*tch)

My friend has taken the adventure of getting herself a nutritionist, watching her food intake and not the scale.  I applaud and have definitely been amazed and proud at her effort.

Until she says stuff like "I just want my fat to turn to muscle and I can't wait for that to happen".  No.  That is not how it works, and in fact, you should know this...you were a biology major.  NO.

I told her as much, nicer of course...am I a big meanie pants?

Not like I care terribly but sometimes I feel like I beat her over the head with information.  Like "there is no toning, only losing fat to show muscle".  TONE IS NOT A WORKOUT WORD.

I hate "muscle weighs more than fat."  No it doesn't.

Okay, she was talking about body composition rather than fat being transitioned to muscle.  *sigh*

I get worked up about the misconceptions that people subscribe to.

I suppose that statement is very misleading without quantifiers.

Misuse of terms like that irk me too. I once saw an ad for a "fat melting laser." I just kept picturing a bunch of women with liquefied fat sloshing around inside them.

Doesn't muscle weigh more than fat? I would think that it has a higher density than fat, and by volume would weigh more.

A pound is a pound is a pound.

  • I believe what people are referring to is this:

I don't have any great proof but a "cup" of muscle would weight more than a "cup" of fat. Muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue. So if someone weighs 150 lbs and has a lot of muscle, they will looks smaller than someone who weighs 150 lbs and has a lot of fat.

^^^^^ is me exactly.  I don't look like I weigh what I do, but I do.  And I find it amusing.

I understand that the density and size of a pound is different.  A POUND of something still WEIGHS the same as a POUND of something else.

Well obviously a pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of rocks but muscle does weigh more than fat as you deny above. If one is talking about weight the other variable is usually assumed to be volume.

  • the volume of 1 pound of muscle is less than the volume of 1 pound of fat.  Each pound weighs the same, but the muscle takes up less space.
  • A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. They weigh a pound each.

@ftrMrsO - if your friend has mastered some sort of alchemical secret, why waste time turning fat into muscle, when you could turn it into diamonds?

    That sounds terribly uncomfortable!
