Wine Friday Recommendations

I would love to know what types and brands of wine do you Knotties drink. I like to know your preferences. I'm venturing into reds and if you are a big red wine drinker, please send me your faves!!! :) Does anyone else have a Total Wine? If you have one,we can exchange favorite types.

Re: Wine Friday Recommendations

  • I drink red, but I'm not that picky. I really only drink either AtoZ (which is decent) or menage a trois (which is my favorite 10-15 dollar wine).

  • I had the Pinot By menage a trois. I love their stuff.

I tend to favor red wine more but, I also drink white wine on occasions. When it's nice outside and during the summer time I love chardonnay or a pinot grigio. I usually buy whatever is on sale since I don't drink a lot of it.

For red wine, at home when I'm cooking dinner I love a cabernet. Trader Joe's has a really good one called "Dark Horse". It's like $7 a bottle. Rex Goliath is a cheap one I often buy at Target that's good too. It's also a cabernet.

  • I'm really not at all knowledgeable about wines, but I've found Clos du Bois and Concha y Toro to be reliably good. And of course, Black Box and Bota. :) But right now, I'm drinking a mint julep.

We had my parents pick out the wine for our wedding (they're major winos), but we can't get any of the stuff they chose in PA. Stupid state stores!!
  • I tend to drink whites. Riesling and Moscato. I tend to buy different brands, whatever is on sale, and then forget which ones I like. :p

I do like a local winery, they run the PA Ren Faire, and I fucking love their mead, spiced apple and pear wines. We're going to have the spiced apple at our wedding.

  • - Cheap (under 15) - The Crusher. The cab, red blend & petit sirah are all very good.
    - Mid (around 30) - Clos du Val, cab. One of my all time faves.
    - High (50+) - anything out of the Orin Swift cellar is fantastic. The Prisoner is my favorite, though it's technically now being sold by an offshoot vineyard (apparently using some of the same grapes??).

  • I'm not overly picky about my white wines, but I've always had trouble with reds giving me headaches. So far, of the inexpensive wines, I've had the best luck with Cupcake's pinot noir. I overall drink a lot of Cupcake wines because they are right near the register at my liquor store, but will grab whatever is handy when I'm at other stores. I actually really like Cupcake's prosecco mixed with cranberry-pomegranate juice. It's super yummy.

We have a Total Wine! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Total Wine. I usually buy Pillar Box Red. It's a great red blend and it's only $12 or $13 a bottle I think. Also Apothic Red and Cupcake Red Velvet. I mostly stick with red blends, shiraz and petit syrah. I like some of the Molly Dooker winery stuff but they are pricier...in the $20 to $30 and on up from there kind of range. I end up buying a lot of random stuff. Usually I read the description to get a feel for what flavors I can expect and make my choice from there. I like wines with spicy flavors or that are really big and bold.

  • I am drinking some 3 buck chuck Cabernet from trader joe's I'm not too picky and it's not too bad actually.

  • @CookiePusher I love the cupcake wines I have to look for the prosecco mixed with cranberry-pomegranite juice sounds yummy!

    Anniversary

  • @Peaseblossom55 The prosecco doesn't come mixed with the juice, I do it on my own with whatever 100% juice I can find on sale at the supermarket. I put a bit of the juice in the glass first, then pour the prosecco on top so it creates an ombre effect in the glass. It's become our go-to drink at family holidays because TASTY!

I am the same. I love reds that are spicy and just amazingly bold. I will look at Pillar Box Red when I stop by Total Wine in the next few days. A lot of my friends love the Apothic Red as well.

  • I drink mostly white, and some red. FI is the other way around. We both drink rosé. I used to work for an online wine magazine and social networking site here in SA, keeping the "stock" up to date (each wine had a page), and writing articles. I don't really know foreign wines, I tend to stick with local because I haven't got much money for wine at the moment. I have no idea which, if any, of these are available overseas.

    Without hesitation I can recommend:
Casillero del Diablo Gewurtztraminer if you like a sweet-ish white. Not local. It's Chilean. The brand rep who introduced me to it said that she calls it "Litchi Juice" because that's what it tastes like to her, and she's totally right. It is delicious.
Painted Wolf "Penny" Viognier. I have no words. Seriously.
ANYTHING that comes out of the Hermanuspietersfontein cellars.
    Zevenwacht Bouquet Blanc
    Porcupine Ridge Sauvignon Blanc
    Casillero del Diablo Malbec
    Painted Wolf Pinotage
    Sterhuis Merlot
    Spier Creative Block 5
    Dutoitskloof Merlot
Es la Vida (Blanca or Rosa) is a fruity, petillant (lightly sparkling) wine, not as bubbly as champagne or MCC but quite pleasant, and a must if you get drunk of half a glass of bubbly, like I do

We will probably use the Es la Vida Blanca as our toasting beverage, and either Porcupine Ridge Sauv Blanc for the white and Porcupine Ridge Merlot for the red, or Wolftrap Red and Wolftrap White.

  • This wont help you unless you're in MD - but there's a winery called Berrywine Plantations in Mt Airy MD and holy shit do they have the best blueberry wine you've ever tasted. And no, it's not arbor mist or a wine cooler. It's blueberry wine. I stock up when I visit MD. (I live in PA now) and I'm relunctant to share. Take my moscato but leave my blueberry alone!

My absolute favorite casual red wines are Francis Coppola Claret or St. Francis caberbet (Napa). They are, both,  velvety and very tasty full bodied red wines. Then my favorite upscale red wines are Joseph Phelps Cabernet (Napa Valley) and Opus One Cabernet (Napa Valley).  As soon as you open the bottle, the entire room will be drunk from the fumes. Lol.  Champagne... my absolute favorite is Perriet Jouet Rose or Moet Nektar Rose.  And white wines... I like them trashy and sweet. Columbia Crest riesling (Washington), or Thirsty Owl Diamond (Finger Lakes, NY)

FI has an old family friend who is gifting us a 1978 Opus for our wedding. To say that I'm excited is an understatement ;)

  • Apothic and Menage e Trois are definitely two goods ones- I'm a Zin drinker, one of my faves for a good price is the 7 Deadly Zins.

If you have a Trader Joe's nearby that's the best place to find wine! They have really great prices so if you don't like one you don't feel as guilty just keeping it to cook with :)

I bought Cupcake's red blend Red Velvet yesterday and really enjoyed it!

Try Gnarley Head Red Zin. It's really tasty and I personally like it a little more than 7 Deadly Zins.
  • @CookiePusher wow I never thought to do that! That sounds so good though I may have to pick up this stuff tonight!

Red Velvet is so yummy! Unfortunately, I can only have one glass before I start getting a headache. On the plus, it means I can make a bottle last for several days. On the negative, only one glass. :(

I just bought some cran-pom juice at the market and am picking up a bottle of prosecco on the way to our cake tasting tonight. That way, I'm all ready for Easter morning with the family! lol

I love Menage a Trois red blend.

I'm also a big fan of Entwine Cabernet.

I love cute wine labels so I do the same thing! I'm planning on DIY'ing them into parts of my centerpieces, so the cute labels are nice to look at in the meantime.

Trader Joe's has a great cabernet called Liberté. LOVE it. But I love any red with dark fruit flavors. Go to WineFolly.com! It's great for learning about new wines based on your current tastes.
