Honeymoon Discussions

St Martin/ Sint Maarten

FI & I want something tropical for our honeymoon, and we originally wanted Bahamas. After researching a bit I found that British Virgin Islands and Aruba are much cheaper. I posted on facebook, asking if anyone had experiences in these destinations. A friend told me her husband is from Sint Maarteen and her father in law could get us the hookup on a lot of hotels out there. A Quick google search and the pictures are amazing, it looks just as gorgeous out there as the Bahamas.

Has anyone traveled out there and what was your experience like? Which side did you stay on, St Martin or Sint Maarten? Where would you recommend we stay? My friend recommends hotel vs resort because she says a resort will make us miss much of the culture of the area. She also says staying in a hotel and go to local spots will get us more authentic food, drinks, etc.

I've never heard much of this area before now so just looking for personal experiences. Oh and cost is a big thing, obviously my friend said she can get us a deal but I don't want to count on that. How much did you pay for how many days?

TIA

Re: St Martin/ Sint Maarten

  • I really enjoyed the one day I spent on St. Maarten.  I traveled around the island, and there was lots of local culture.  I would have liked to have stayed longer.  My DH was interested in the flora.  Great shopping.
Aruba is one of my least favorite islands.  It is a desert climate with beautiful beaches, and absolutely NO local culture.  It doesn't feel like a foreign country.  I remember enjoying a Baskin Robbins ice cream cone while downtown.  This is an island for people who just want the beach.

  • That's really good to know, thank you!

  • I love St Martin.     I stayed on a boat though, so I can't say anything about the resorts.

the Dutch side is more of the "fun" side.  Casinos, night life and my favorite bar SUNSET BAR.  Google it, it's right by the airport.   You can see big jumbo jets landing and taking off.  It's crazy, even been on most extreme airports.

French side as amazing restaurants.  You can pick up some awesome french wines you can't get  in the states.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I have also been to Sunset Bar and the beach next to it, Maho Beach. We went there during a cruise stop. It is a really fun experience!
  • Check out the Rhino Riders boat excursion, it was really fun! I did it at our cruise ship stop. You and your FI get a small dingy boat to race around on.
  • We island hopped on a cruise for our HM. Saint Martin was one of our favorite islands.
