Virginia Blue Mountains/Shenandoah Valley

We are thinking of going to Western VA for a mini-moon after our wedding in NYC on Oct 9. We would be going for 3 nights and don't think we should really go South of Roanoake since it brings it above a 7 hr drive. We were thinking of getting a B&B in Lexingoton or Staunton since there would be places to get dinner, but we would still be able to easily get to the mountains/wineries. Do those sound like ok places to stay? Does anyone have any other suggestions? We don't know the area at all and would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Ooooo it can be really beautiful down in that part of the state. If you wanted to go a bit further to Lynchburg there are some lovely B&Bs in some historic houses that are lovely and there are plenty of museums and vineyards to visit. FI proposed to me at the Carriage House Inn B&B in Lynchburg.

Have you also looked at Middleburg, VA? It's smack in the middle of horse country and is absolutely breathtaking. There are tons of historic inns and B&Bs around that area and the vineyards are great as well - our favorite is called Barrel Oak but there are many many others in that area worth a visit. Skyline Drive is also not far from there.

If you didn't mind going a teensy bit further than Roanoke, The Homestead is a very pretty resort in Hot Springs right at the base of the Allegheny mountians. It is pricey but well worth it if you are looking for something really relaxing

I am a native of the Shenandoah Valley area so feel free to PM me for some additional suggestions!!! :-)

Staunton or Waynesboro would be nice.  If you're interested in historical stuff, then maybe consider Charlottesville -- there are several BandBs around there:-)

Charlottesville is full of B&Bs, vineyards, and historic activities.  Our restaurant scene is amazing.  There are more restaurants per capital than in NYC (someone actually checked).  I'm from right outside the city and LOVE it in Charlottesville.

Now, if you decide to go to Staunton, it's a very small, but cute down.  You have to eat at Staunton Grocery.  It's a fine restaurant that sources everything locally.  They have a prix fixe menu on Sundays that is fantastic.
