What is the proper way to address invites for a church wedding?

My FI and I are having a church wedding and I'm confused as to the 'rule' on written numbers v. numerals. I was always under the impression that for a more formal event, you wrote out the date and time, but the address of the location was in numerals. But now I'm being told that there should be continuity, and either write everything out or use all numerals. (FWIW, the person telling me this also put registry info on their wedding invites, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.)

I wasn't able to find a definitive answer anywhere, so I thought I'd ask E, seeing as you ladies know everything...

The bigger deal, of course, is 'honour of your presence' vs. 'pleasure of your company.'

    But Miss Manners does it:

Saturday, the thirteenth of September, two thousand fourteen (no 'and') [also, the year is optional] at St. Whosits of Wherever's Church, 1234 Holy Road, Anytown, State.

    ETA: Also, I like cake.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Cake! Cake! Cake!

Wait, what flavor? And how much sugar is in it?
  • We are having 3 flavors, lemon with raspberry filling, white cake with raspberry filling and chocolate cake layers with chocolate ganache, raspberry filling all with Italian meringue buttercream icing.

  • Nom. I'm inviting myself for the lemon cake.
  • We're having white cake with French creme and raspberry filling! Mmm...raspberry...

  • I am also inviting myself for cake. After I go to @chibiyui's wedding and have milkshakes.

Saturday, the thirteenth of September, Two thousand fourteen, St. So and So's Church, 1234 Name Street, City, State

I also used the honour of your presence in the invitation and the favour of your reply.... for the invitation and reply card. PM if you want to see my copy

  • Our cake has three layers: white cake with lemon cream filling, chocolate cake with chocolate cream and raspberry puree filling, and white cake with mandarin orange filling. We will be having one slice from each tier!

I went with 'honor' b/c we already printed invites once for the old ceremony venue, (RSVP were more casual) and I am trying to keep costs down, I know it might not be Miss Manners approved but I'm stressed out enough right now, so it is what it is...

  • Sorry I totally derailed your thread into cake, @lennonkdc.
  • The "u" in honor and favor is optional for Americans now, so that iis not a problem.
I can't vote in your poll because none of your examples are correct.  No abbreviations are allowed, including "St."  Saint must be written out in full.

The honor of your presence in requested
    at the marriage of
    Bride's Full Name
    and
    Groom's Full Name

    Saturday, the thirteenth of September
    two thousand fourteen
    time o'clock

    Saint So and So's Church
    1234 Main Street
    City, State

Is this a Catholic wedding?  Will there be Mass?  That makes a difference.

  • Eh, you need the time of day on the invitation.

Unsolicited advice - I would have one of the three not have raspberry filling.  I know a surprising amount of people who cannot eat raspberries or can't stand raspberry filling.  (I, on the other hand, would want a small slice of each!)

It will be a Catholic ceremony with a full Mass, how does that change the invitations?

    Spot-on!

But I prefer 'Saint Whosits of Wherever' or 'Saint Whatshisnuts of Wherever.'

Which is irreverent but amusing. At least to me. :)

  • Thank you! I hope I can make that all fit the invitations we picked out already....

CN - we booked everything for our wedding before I heard the call back to my faith and became confirmed in Feb, then had to rearranging everything which is obviously worth it, but rearranging a whole wedding four months out is pretty stressful! We've already bought invites on VP, so I'm hoping to have to only order the invitations and not the whole shebang, or worse have to pick out new ones...

  • I think that is beautiful!

VP is super friendly, and often, to get a line to fit, you just have to make the font a teeny bit smaller.  I had to fit Millian Memorial United Methodist Church on my daughter's invitation!  You can break up a line to make it fit if you need to do that.  Just don"t break up "Sacrament of Holy Matrimony" or "Nuptial Mass".

My pastor told this in church on Sunday:

A priest, a Baptist preacher and a Methodist minister met in town.
"How is it going?" asked the minister.
"Wonderful!" replied the Baptist preacher.  I baptized four new members into the church last week!  We have been working hard for the Lord.  How about you, Father?"
"Oh"said the priest, "I don't want to brag, but we received six new members into our parish last week!  Six!  And you, Reverend?"
"Well, that is great news!" replied the Methodist minister.  "That is just wonderful.  Last week I got rid of my ten biggest trouble-makers!"

    :-D
