Tips for dealing with a ban on exercise?

Hi ladies-- thanks for all the encouragement in the MRI thread.  It was a weird experience but it was OK, and it really helped hearing all of your experiences.  I had a marathon of tests and Dr. visits today, and while things are still somewhat unclear waiting on blood work, it seems that I probably do not have RA (yippee!) but I seem to have some kind of congenital joint malformation (boo!).

Dr. thinks it can be managed with PT so I learn how to protect my joints (yay!) but it will take a lot of work, and at least for the next few weeks I cannot work out at all (boo!).  I asked him if I can even do yoga or Pilates and he said nothing at all.  Like, not even a long walk.  I'm basically supposed to be as sedentary as possible.

Already I am jumping out of my skin.  I went to the doctor in the first place because it was hurting to run and I couldn't stand being unable to get outside and cover some miles.  It's just how I relieve stress.  Not always a run, but barre classes, Pilates, Bob Harper DVDs, whatever... if I don't work out a few times a week, I just get extremely stressed.  Fi already made a joke about how he's gonna go stay with his parents for a few weeks, because I become a huge bitch when I don't get my workout in!

So-- what healthy ways of relieving stress would you all try when you can't exercise?  Obviously eating and shopping make me feel temporarily better, but neither of those is a good solution. :)

ETA: @Rebl90 made me think of this-- maybe I should also be asking, do you have any good clean eating tips, especially for snacks?  I can see myself just packing on the pounds if I'm going to be couch-bound for the next few weeks.

Do you like to read? Crochet? Knit? Sew? Draw? Write? Maybe learn a new hobby like one of these? I've had to stop exercising on and off for the past 10 years due to a series of orthopedic surgeries and when I couldn't exercise I would make sure to have lots of books or projects on hand so I could channel my energy into something productive.  Because let me tell you, it's SO hard to not just grab a snack when you are bored that often (unless you have an amazing will not to do so).  So sorry you're dealing with this but glad to hear it's most likely not RA!

Oh man. So good news and bad news all in one. To be honest, I'm the same way as you. If I stop any form of physical activity, I get cranky and moody. And anxious. Then I start to eat a lot. I fall into a vicious cycle.

Well, shopping helps, but it's not the best solution like you said! I will say that now that it's "spring" (although winter refuses to let go) maybe going out and laying in the sun with a good book would be nice. I go down to the piers in the summer with a book or magazine, and tan. Meet up with friends for some drinks. Do you have an iPad? Maybe download some fun apps. I have also wanted to try crocheting or knitting, so maybe you can try those?

As for food- fruit/veggie smoothies! And maybe cut back on carbs ( since you won't be able to do physical activity, you won't need the energy from them). Munch on some fruit or nuts as healthy snacks. Did he give you a time frame at all?

  • Um...give some of that get up and go to me and I will pass along plenty of lethargy to you.
  • Drink lots of water and chew on gum to keep from snacking. Helps to find something to do with your hands too... crafts, a musical instrument, etc. I used to play piano to relieve stress (when I had one. Working on getting one in the next few weeks!). Sometimes it helps to crank an angry or upbeat song up loud in the car and sing it out at the top of my lungs. :) Work on your epic lip sync battling skills ala Emma Stone.

  • @lolo883 OMG Emma Stone is the best.  That is all.

@pinkcow13 He said probably two weeks while I get started with PT.... although I have to go through my school health services to get the blood tests and referral, so I might have to wait longer until that two weeks of PT actually starts.  :-/

@blergbot Gosh, I wish.  I just get sort of pent up.  Now I have HIMYM on the brain from the other thread, but it's like how Marshall just has to close the door to his office and dance!  I will jump and dance around my house if I get stressed and don't have time for a whole workout.  Or I'll walk around the house with 8 pound hand weights doing upper-body exercises.  I like the endorphins. I also really like to eat, so I'm not buff or anything.  I just like to feel strong.

  • My mind is sorta like that, I guess. Always going. My body just likes to be lazy. Not saying I want to have a lazy mind, but it would be nice to have more of a balance. I do have this leg tapping problem that gets worse and worse with stress. That's gotta burn some calories, right?

Oh gosh I'm sorry! I'm pretty lazy generally but if I had to be that sedentary I'd go crazy too.

I would probably try to find something crafty or artsy to do. That can be pretty zen. Even if you don't have a creative bone in your body, even coloring in a coloring book can help. Meditate? Get a nice journal to write and doodle in? I like the singing idea too- I'm really, really bad at it but it always puts me in a better mood anyway. If you have a pet I like to do a little "spa day" for my pet and give them a bath and brush and trim them up really nice, as mildly psychotic as that sounds.

As far as clean eating goes, Blogilates has a lot of simple healthy recipes that I like. A lot of them are good substitutes for things like pizza, ice cream sandwiches, donuts, etc. They're pretty good at least in my opinion.

That's tough if you exercise regularly. Are short walks allowed?

You may not be allowed to do yoga, but have you ever tried meditation? Several of my family members meditate regularly and swear by it.

How do you feel about cooking? Just because you can't exercise doesn't mean you can't still eat delicious meals. Spend time researching and cook up new things in the kitchen. It's lots of fun, I promise.

  • Sex and wine. Seriously... this is the only acceptable answer. Lol

So glad it's not RA- hope you start to feel better! I was placed on a moderate, weeklong bed rest earlier in my pregnancy, and it sucked, since like you, I'm very active. I found that stretching while sitting/laying down kept me somewhat at bay. Stretch your fingertips as far from your wrists as possible, point your toes all the way to the ceiling then all the way to the floor, etc. YouTube some tai chi exercises and follow along sitting down, doing the upper body only. I know this all sounds terrible but it did help a bit.
If you're able to stand up/cook, maybe some quinoa dishes w lots of seasoned veggies, or if you can't be up long enough to cook, chopped bell peppers and carrots with hummus is a good snack. Again, hope you feel better soon!
  • Thanks everybody!  Unfortunately any activities with detailed hand work Are out. I'm actually Knotting  with Dragon Dictation because I really should not be using my hands. Whatever kind of joint problem I've got going on, I'm basically not supposed to use any of my joints. Which really sucks. I think that taking short walks would be okay, I can read, and I think I will probably continue some stretching exercises. I also have some physical therapy for my hands, little exercises that I can do.

Sex and wine sounds like a good plan. :-)
