I am getting married in July 2014. Both my fiance and I want a very intimate wedding and planning to invite about 50 to our reception. Can anyone advice what will be the most appropriate dress to wear at my age? Does the color matter? Thank you so much! Linda

H and I went to the wedding of his Uncle a few years back. Both were in their late 40's/early 50's. I judged the dress choice because it was a strapless white ballgown, but I judged it not because of the style per se but because the dress looked more suited for a debutante ball rather then for someone in their late 40's.

I would try dresses on and find something that you think looks good on you, but I do also think you need to keep in mind that some dresses are "younger" looking then others. As far as color goes, you can wear whatever color you want...white, black, pink, blue, purple, etc. A wedding dress does not have to be white. An acquaintance of mine just wore a gorgeous black, lace gown to her wedding and she looked absolutely stunning.

My mom was in her early 50s when she remarried. She wore a dressy (as opposed to business) blue suit. They also had a very small wedding/reception.

You can wear whatever you wish. It is your wedding. The old rules about not wearing a white wedding dress the second time around are gone. There are some nice destination style gowns that would flatter a mature bride, if that is what you want. (I am 63.) LeSuit is a company that makes nice church suits. It is entirely up to you! Yes, you can wear a veil.

When my step-mom married my dad it was her second wedding and she was in her 30s, she wore a fairly traditional white wedding gown. When my mom re-married in her late 40s she wore white jeans and green tank top, and her wife to be wore a white sun dress. It was a very casual wedding. For my first wedding, I'll be wearing a red dress.

Wear what you like. What makes you feel beautiful. And forget old played out rules.

I love the dress in the first link CMGragain! If I were going short I was going to get something like that.

I'm 44 and getting married for my first time. We are similar in age. I wanted anything but a strapless dress. Not that I don't think they are pretty, or that older women can't look good in them, but I didn't want to be pulling up my dress all day as I've seen every other bride in a strapless dress do. That and strapless seems to be the bridal uniform anymore and I wanted to look different.

I chose more of a flowing evening gown, rather than a ballgown. It has straps but a low back. Fortunately I'm still perky and the built in bra works for me so I can get away with it. I love low back dresses!

You should join us on the over 40 board. It's not terribly active , but there are a few of us.
