Wedding Woes

Venue woes

So, I'm wondering if anyone might be able to throw something my way, links, what have you.

I live just outside of Washington, DC, and would like to get married at an outdoor venue if possible, next May.  Trouble is, my Dad might be selling his home, where I'd originally planned to have the ceremony.  My Mom passed away last year and Dad needs to downsize.  So, now I'm trying to scramble for a venue, but holy cow, these venues ain't cheap, ladies!

Any ideas, comments, etc for a broke bride like myself, trying to not overwhelm my wonderful hubby to be?  He's been awesome in shouldering some of this burden, but lord knows I can't overdo it, here.

Sigh.  I am ready for chocolate...

Re: Venue woes

  • you might want to post this on your local board (in terms of location specific recs) - and possibly on "Budget Brides" if you're looking for ideas to reduce cost

  • What Barbie said.

You can also look into national/state/local parks nearby. Look at a restaurant that has private rooms, have it there. Maybe pricey up front, but you take care of an exceptional amount of wedding crap in one contract.

If you or FI have any alumni affiliations with a college or university, you can look into venues there. Lots of them will rent out their facilities for non-uni events.

Have a destination wedding at a location that's reasonably nearby-ish, but out of the circle of everything DC related.

But the smaller you can get the event, the easier it will be to think outside the box for a venue.

  • off season weddings are cheaper like in the fall- march is when they are less expensive. looking at venues outside the city like 30 minutes to an hour drive will also save you money
having a wedding on a friday or sunday vs a saturday evening, saturday day weddings are less as well...

finding a venue that also includes a cake and flowers,
we found a venue that includes cake centerpeices and a dj

i dont know what the norm is in the dc area but in new england where i am from venues go anywhere from 45-150 pp and that includes full sit down dinners buffets or stations, open bar, some included cakes others like mine include the cake flowers and dj
