Shut up. Shut up. SHUT UP.

My idiot co-worker is comparing her ordeal with her adult daughter having epilepsy to our co-worker's wife having a tumor on her spine and her neighbor's husband having an inoperable brain tumor that he's getting chemo and radiation for.

This is also the same co-workers that acts like she's an expert an all things medical, including giving birth, even though she had her last kid 34 years ago.

You just posted about the 3 things I deal with at work everyday! Love them all - very interesting medical conditions. I have seen epilepsy destroy people's lives but this individual had cognitive issues resulting from it. Can it paralyze you like a tumor on the spinal cord? No. Can it kill you?... Yes it can. Families living with someone with epilepsy live in constant fear that they will have another seizure and not get to them in time, or that the seizure will be serious enough to kill them. The brain tumor is terrible - depending on what it is though, they could have a great outcome! But that is definitely an acute period of fear and anxiety. I would say that is not a lifelong chronic fear and worry, like epilepsy is.

Now, most people thankfully who have epilepsy are very well controlled and are in no danger of having fatal seizures. So I can see how your coworker is overreacting.

I do understand that they live in constant fear. As far as I know, the daughter is on medication and hasn't had a seizure in over 10 years.

Sorry you have such an annoying coworker!

And when I read your title before clicking, I actually pictured chandler telling Ross to shut up on the stairs...and there's your gif! Lol

Then, IMHO, she's crazy and rude for comparing!

I feel like "out-doing" someone is an every day goal for almost all workers in an office setting! My co-worker bought a house recently and ANY time someone comes over to ask me how wedding planning is going she chimes in about how hard it is to buy a house and how busy she is too. Please get over yourself! Her and her huband had a destination wedding and zero planning so this is her depserate attempt for some kind of attention. Come on. Okay I feel better now. haha

This co-worker is very much like that. Any time someone here asks me about the wedding, she talks over me and starts talking about her daughter's wedding that was 8 years ago. This is an especially amazing feat considering we are in separate offices! So essentially she has to be eavesdropping and then has to get up and walk into my office to interrupt.

I think she is related to my DH.  He thinks he knows everything.

This frigen guy at my work is so uuuugh. He's like the director of sales so everyone has to pretty much be nice to him because he's semi big-wig but I can't stand him. He just asked me how my week is going and I said "one more day til Vegas!". He said "Oh great, good for you! Rod Stewart is playing there- do you even know who he is? Olivia Newton John is playing right now- are you old enough to know who she is? Are you even old enough to gamble there?" He was joking around but I'm 30 years old so I don't appreciate being talked to like I'm 18.

Ugh. People need to stop saying words when they don't know things. I do think this comes partly from one-upmanship, but also partially because when people are processing this kind of news about co-workers and friends they are worried too and want to be helpful, but since they can't be they just offer the next best piece of comparison or quasi-advice they can because it at least feels like they're doing something to help even if they're really not. When I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's last week, FI's brother called up FI at 9:00 at night to say that he just talked to his father-in-law who's a doctor and that chemo causes infertility and he "just wanted to make sure we were aware of that." Not being an oncologist, his brother's FIL doesn't know that there are many different types of chemo treatments and the one I'm getting has an extremely low risk for infertility. Do ya think this is something we would've discussed already with an actual oncologist? Also, if that were true, how exactly would calling up your already-worried brother at 9 PM be at all helpful? Thanks, bro, now that we know that I guess we just either ignore the cancer or drop thousands of dollars we don't have on egg-freezing. So glad you're here to help!

The world would be a much better place if, before dispensing unhelpful comparisons or uninformed medical advice, people would just ask themselves two questions: 1) Are you the doctor/nurse practitioner/other care specialist who's in charge of treating this person's ailment? 2) Has this person actually asked for your advice? If the answer is "No" to either one of these, it's probably time to remember the Chandler .gif and proceed accordingly.

@jenna8984 Stuff like that drives me nuts! I'm a retail manager and I look much younger than I actually am, so I get great comments like 'are you sure you're the manager?'.

Or how one of the older SMS at work was talking about Guns n Roses and asked if I knew who they were. Um, yes, shall I play you Paradise city now? Cause it's on my iPhone. I know I'm only 26 but that doesn't mean I live under a rock in backstreet boy land.

And now that I'm ranting, I am really annoyed by people in general who consider their weirdly specific music knowledge to make them a superior person. Like, if you haven't heard this Finnish death metal band you just have the worst taste ever!

My bosses do that too. It's so annoying. "Oh, you've probably never heard of <insert classic rock band name here>. Dudes, I'm 33 and my parents were hippies. I know ALL the classic rock bands. Asshats.
