I want to do wish lanterns at my reception.  Can anyone refer me to a place to purchase ones that actually work well?  :)

Sky lanterns are a fire hazard, and they may even be banned in your state. Also, like balloon releases, they litter.

Ditto PP.  They always make me think of that scene in I Give it a Year.  Also, this is stolen from the Chinese, Taiwanese, and Thai cultures.

  • Stolen?  Haha!  Everything in America is "stolen" from one culture or another.  I'm doing ONE lantern for my husband and I.  Emmy, do you use tampons?  They litter too.  Moving on, is there anyone that can answer my initial question?  I'm not looking for opinions.  Thanks ladies :)

Then you should not post on a public message board. And I don't see tampons littering the highways or ecosystems of the world. Maybe you should stick to google search feature. They don't care if you have an attitude there.

Actually, I don't use tampons! So there you go. Find another way to make a wish that doesn't risk causing a forest fire or burning someone's house down.

I've never seen any that actually work well. They all either catch on fire and fall immediately, or catch on fire in midair and fall dangerously in another location, or burn out and fall as litter.

No, your original question clearly said plural lanterns, not one.

  • I dislike both the hazardous sky lanterns and the OP's attitude.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

When is the last time a tampon posed a fire hazard to bystanders?

And there's a distinct difference between keeping traditions from ethnic backgrounds and appropriating ones that have deep cultural meaning because you think it's pretty.

And there's also a thing called googling reviews.

Plus also, you need to delete your account or ask Knot Porscha to change your screen name.  Using your full name is very dangerous on the internet.  There are crazy people out there that will do crazy things to your sites and such just by knowing your first name.

  • Ooooo, what a DEEP cultural meaning I'm breaking!

Thai Lanterns is another phrase that is sometimes used to refer to Wish Lanterns. Wish Lantern is the USA's original supplier of thai lanterns, the safe and quiet alternative to fireworks that create an amazing visual effect when they are released into the sky.

Northern Thailand could well be said to be the world wide home of wish lanterns - in Thailand, like nowhere else, wish lanterns are widely used all year round for celebrations including breath-taking lanten festivals, and are a part of the fabric of Thai culture .The phrase Thai Lanterns is a Western invention - Wish Lanterns are properly called Khoom Loy or Khoom Fay in Thai.

The largest and most stunning of all Thai Lantern festivals takes place during the month of Yee Peng - the festival of Loy Kratong in Chiang Mai - in which lovers and partners gather on the riverbanks to float flowers and candles, launch fireworks and release thai lanterns together.

And for you eco-friendly worried people:

The rice paper will completely dissolve after it gets wet in a matter of days. All that remains after that is the bamboo ring and a string, which are both, made of 100 % organic material and break down in due course.

Lastly, the lanterns only stay lit for about 12 miutes and don't go too far, good thing my reception is surrounded by fields of farmland!  :)~~~

  • Oh good! Maybe then you'll be lucky enough to have your lateen land on bales of hay or a dried field waiting for re-tilling (and maybe you'll be lucky enough that animals will be in those fields).

    That would be SO romantic!

OP, don't get me wrong, it is pretty and I understand wanting to do pretty things at your wedding. But there are LOTS of other pretty things that you could do: what about just doing a regular candle lighting, or planting a tree, or tying pretty ribbons? You also get keepsakes from those beyond just pictures!

I know that you are not worried about the potential dangers of this, but many of your guests may be as well, and is that really how they should be reflecting on your wedding?

So, it is obvious that you know how to use the google search feature.  Again, I recommend that you use that to get the answer to your question.  You have a ragingly bad attitude that does not mix well here.

And plusalso, still littering and a fire hazard.  Newsflash, those lanterns stay lit for longer than 12 minutes. You can only see them for 12 minutes.  Have you ever been to a farm? It is complete vegetation that doesn't belong to you. It can be dry and catch fire with the smallest spark. A portion of my uncle's farm burned because someone flicked a cigarette butt out a window.

    Here you go--

    Dangers[edit]

Sky lantern litter at Scottish Natural Heritage's Muir of Dinnet national nature reserve

A sky lantern may land when the flame is still alight, making it a fire hazard.[5] In typical designs, as long as the lantern stays upright the paper will not get hot enough to ignite, but if the balloon is tilted (say, by the wind or by hitting some object), it may catch fire while still in the air. All the paper will usually burn in a few seconds, but the flame source may remain lit until it hits the ground.

After the balloon lands, the leftover thin wire frame will rust away very slowly, remaining a hazard to animals that may swallow it.[6] In 2009 British company Sky Orbs Chinese Lanterns developed lanterns with a bio-degradable fireproof rope in place of metal wire.[7] Many other European manufacturers adopted similar designs. In 2012 the same company released a patented design with fireproof base following reports of fires caused by lanterns.[8]

Sky lanterns have also been alleged to pose a danger to aircraft.[9]

On 1 July 2013 the 'largest fire ever' in the West Midlands of England, involving 100,000 tonnes of recycling material and causing an estimated six million pounds worth of damage, was started by a sky lantern which landed at a plastics recycling plant in Smethwick. Images of the lantern starting the fire were captured on CCTV.[10][11] In response to the fire, Poundlanddecided to stop selling sky lanterns and recalled their entire stock on 6 July 2013.[12]

  • Wish lanterns are super pretty but a lot of the time they don't really take off right. It's just... not super worth it. Watch Tangled again, get it out of your system, and find something else cute to do. There are lots of other options.

Wow, you seriously don't understand how it is inappropriate for people with no ties to a culture to steal things that they find "pretty" and participate in?  Another thing that gets my goat is when people do balloon releases.  The balloons come down as litter and often animals, such as sea turtles, eat them because they think the balloons are food.

So you just run the risk of a destroying a farmer's livelihood.  If it's a cash crop and you destroy it they don't get paid.  If it's a feed crop and you destroy it they can't feed their animals.  So then they have to spend more money to buy feed or they can't feed their animals in which case they die and they don't get paid.

But I'm sure they'll think it was well worth it for you to have a pretty moment at your wedding.

  • I agree with PPs. It's too much of a fire hazard and whoever you're renting from may not allow it anyway because of this. You really should respect the property you're renting.

Can you maybe find a less dangerous alternative? There are plenty of other pretty things you can do for your wedding; like, you can maybe do a kite thing - that'd be kind of similar without the fire hazard and you can keep the kite; they even have those kites with the box shape and glow in the dark kites or you can do a candle lighting together.

Well my friend did this performance art thing that involved lighting tampons on fire...but there were fire extinguishers very handy.
